Broner vs. Rees tonight: Could lightning strike twice?

broner#1By Steven Ocallaghan: On 27th September 1986 a young Jamaican born Englishman who went by the name of Lloyd Honeyghan went on to shock unbeaten American superstar Donald The Lone Star Cobra Curry. Not only did he shock the Cobra he shook the world.

Curry , from Texas was probably the pound for pound king at that time and with a record of 25-0 with 20 KOs, was the overwhelming favourite. The bookies even stopped taking bets.
In the build up to the fight Curry was heard saying “who is this ragamuffin” hence the reason Honeyghan called himself the ragamuffin man.

Rees refuses to look at Broner during face-off at weigh-in

YouTube video
By Scott Gilfoid: In a telling sign for what we’ll be seeing tomorrow night in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Gavin Rees (37-1-1, 18 KO’s) flat out refused to look WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) in the eyes when the two came together for a face off at the weigh-in.

Not only did Rees refuse to look at Broner, but he didn’t even face him in the traditional sense. Rees turned sideways, as if to escape the menacing stares from the intimidating Broner. To say that Rees looked scared was putting it mildly. He looked downright frightened to the extreme.

Kellerman: Broner is a huge favorite over Rees because he’s special

broner62By Scott Gilfoid: HBO analyst Max Kellerman doesn’t think WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner is a huge favorite over Welsh fighter Gavin Rees due to Rees being a limited fighter, but rather because Broner is just so talented right now that he’s head and shoulders over the rest of the lightweight pack.

Kellerman said to I Film London “He’s [Rees] a good fighter, and the odds, which are absurdly wide over here, as much as 80-1 at some point, is a reflection more of what they think of Broner than what they think of Gavin. People think Broner is a special kind of fighter, and I think the odds reflect that over here. He can fight, Gavin Rees can fight…The way Broner, it was one of the most thorough beatings you’ll see a top fighter.

Broner: Marquez is easy money; his talent level aint that good

marquez999By Scott Gilfoid: WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) wouldn’t mind facing Juan Manuel Marquez if he’s got an open schedule in the near future. Broner has a fight on Saturday night against Gavin Rees, but after that Broner doesn’t have anyone in mind for his next fight, and he’d like to take on Marquez to show the boxing world his talent.

Broner said to thaboxingvoice.com “[Marquez is] easy money too. He cool, [but] his talent level aint that good. He’s a good Mexican. We have time on our hands. I’m a fresh 23. I’m ok.”

Broner with few fight options after he dismantles Rees

broner9282By Scott Gilfoid: As long as WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner chooses to stubbornly stick it out in the lightweight division, he’s going to have very options for interesting fights after he obliterates his latest over-matched opponent Gavin Rees on Saturday night at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Broner knows that he doesn’t have anyone to fight at 135, yet he claims he’s still young at 23, and there’s no reason for him to be in any rush to move up.

Broner’s immediate options after the Rees fight is for him to face the winner of the March 16th fight between WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns vs. IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez.

Rees: I want to smack Broner in the mouth

broner3By Scott Gilfoid: WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) has let everyone know exactly how he feels about his over-matched opponent Gavin Rees (37-1-1, 18 KO’s) by pretending he doesn’t know his name.

In other words, Rees is so badly out of his class in this fight that Broner won’t even bother to mention his name. That’s more of a message to Broner’s promoters at Golden Boy then it is about Rees. I mean, they’re the ones that set up this horrendous mismatch in the first place.

Adrien Broner: By the end of the year I’ll be a PPV star

broner563By Scott Gilfoid: Boxing fans had better enjoy seeing the talented WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) on regular HBO broadcasts while they still can because by the end of 2013 they may be having to pay to see Broner on pay per view on HBO, at least that’s what the 23-year-old Broner is saying.

Broner said to thaboxingvoice.com “By the end of the year I’ll be a pay per view attraction.

If this turns out to be true then Broner will have be way ahead of what Floyd Mayweather Jr. accomplished when he first became a PPV attraction. For Mayweather Jr, he didn’t become a PPV star until his 11th year as a pro when he fought Oscar De La Hoya in 2007. It was that fight that made Mayweather Jr. a big PPV star, and he’s been on PPV ever since.

Broner: I don’t blame Ricky Burns for not wanting to fight me

broner452By Scott Gilfoid: WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) thinks WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) is doing to the smart thing by choosing not to fight him despite having had an opportunity to fight him twice. Broner says he totally understands Burns’ situation, and he thinks he’s doing a good job fighting the kinds of guys he’s being matched up with right now.

Broner said to thaboxingvoice.com “Who WOULD want to fight me? I don’t blame him [Burns]. He’s doing good, he’s doing alright. Just stay away from me [if you want to keep doing good].”

I agree with Broner. Burns needs to stay far, far away from Broner if he wants to keep doing good. Broner is arguably a level above Burns in talent, and there’s not much in Burns’ game that Broner wouldn’t have an answer for.
