By Eric Baldwin: WBA World featherweight champion Jesus Andres Cuellar (28-1, 21 KOs) successfully weighed in at 124lbs at today’s weigh-in for his title defense this Saturday night against Abner Mares (29-2-1, 15 KOs) for their fight on Showtime Championship Boxing at the USC Galen Center, in Los Angeles, California.

Premier Boxing Champions is promoting the show. Mares weighed in at 126lbs. This is going to be a really tough fight for the 31-year-old Mares, because he’s been out of the ring for over a year since his loss to Leo Santa Cruz in August 2015. That was a grueling fight that saw Mares worn down and beaten by a 12 round majority decision by the scores 114-114, 117-111 and 117-111.

By Eric Baldwin: Former three division world champion Abner Mares (29-2-1, 15 KOs) has reportedly passed his California medical exams, and he’s reportedly ready for his title shot against WBA World featherweight champion Jesus Andres Cuellar (28-1, 21 KOs) as soon as Premier Boxing Champions can give him a date to fight.

The 30-year-old Mares has had eye problems that has slowed his progress making it back into the ring. But with Mares passing his California eye exam, according to Lance Pugmire of the LA Times, he can move ahead and take the fight with the hard hitting 29-year-old Argentinian Cuellar.

Abner Mares – Jesus Cuellar fight off

1-Cellar-Mares Press Conference_Presser_Scott Hirano _ Showtime _ Premier Boxing Champions5

By Dan Ambrose: In a big disappointment, the scheduled June 25 fight matching former three division world champion Abner Mares (29-2-1, 15 KOs) and WBA World featherweight champion Jesus Cuellar (28-1, 21 KOs) has been cancelled due to 30-year-old Mares having a medical issue that will keep him from taking the fight in the New York. According to Dan Rafael, Mares failed two New York State Athletic Commission eye exams this week.

The Cuellar vs. Mares fight was supposed to have taken place on the undercard of the Keith Thurman vs. Shawn Porter fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. There wasn’t a great deal of hype surrounding the fight, as most of the attention was being spent on the main event between Thurman and Porter.

Abner Mares faces Fernando Montiel on 3/12 on Thurman-Porter card

Image: Abner Mares faces Fernando Montiel on 3/12 on Thurman-Porter cardBy Dan Ambrose: Former three division world champion Abner Mares (29-2-1, 15 KOs) will be looking to bounce back from a loss in his last fight against Leo Santa Cruz when he faces 36-year-old former three division world champion Fernando Montiel (54-5-2, 39 KOs) in a 10-round scheduled fight in featherweight action on March 12 on Premier Boxing Champions on CBS from the Mohegan Sun Casino, in Uncasville, Connecticut.

It’s unclear why Mares, #2 WBC, #3 WBA, is going back to fighting weak opposition once again by facing the well past his best #14 WBC Montiel. Mares, 30, chewed up a year and a half of his career fighting weaker opposition following a 1st round knockout loss to Jhonny Gonzalez in 2013.

Jhonny Gonzalez vs. Abner Mares possible for March

Jhonny GonzalezBy Dan Ambrose: Negotiations are taking place for a rematch between world champions Abner Mares (29-2-1, 15 KOs) and Jhonny Gonzalez (59-10, 49 KOs) for a fight that would take place in March. This would be a match-up for Mares, 30, to try and avenge his 1st round knockout loss at the hands of Gonzalez 2 ½ years ago in 2013. The two fighters never were able to face each other in a rematch as plans for a second fight were wiped out by injuries in the past.

It’s unclear whether the Gonzalez-Mares rematch will take place because they will need to somehow negotiate the fight and it could prove difficult. However, both fighters aren’t doing so well in terms of their careers.

Santa Cruz vs. Mares: Did Leo prove why skills beat strength conditioning?

STAPLES CENTERBy Gerardo Granados: Do the readers think that you need to bench press +330 pounds and to look like a body builder to knock your opponent out; or if you need to use all those expensive gym equipment to be fit and strong? Is it that a lanky body type of boxer like welter Tommy Hearns or featherweight Salvador Sanchez had serious punching power or do they needed to look ripped like Tim Bradley to hit hard?

Abner Mares looked jacked up at the weigh-in last Friday, and as usual some casual fans like a friend of mine thought that Leo Santa Cruz was in trouble for their fight last Saturday night at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

Mares willing to fight Lomachenko, Walters or Santa Cruz next

Image: Mares willing to fight Lomachenko, Walters or Santa Cruz nextBy Dan Ambrose: Despite taking a frightful beating last Saturday night to unbeaten former two division world champion Leo Santa Cruz (31-0-1, 17 KOs) in losing a 12 round majority decision, 29-year-old Abner Mares (29-2-1, 15 KOs) says he’s willing to get back inside the ring to face the likes of Santa Cruz again, or WBO featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko or former WBA Super World featherweight champion Nicholas Walters. It depends on who his adviser Al Haymon wants Mares to fight.

Mares lost the fight to Santa Cruz by the scores of 114-114, 117-111 and 117-111. Mares was fortunate that the scores of the fight was even that close because you can argue that Mares should have lost by a wider set of scores.
