By Dave Lahr: Boxing fans are going to be in for a shock on December 11th when IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (55-3, 49 KO’s) gets knocked out by the huge British underdog Dereck Chisora (14-0, 9 KO’s) at the SAP-Arena, Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Few people see Chisora winning the fight due to his lack of size, power and experience against quality opposition. I’ll be the first to admit that Chisora’s opposition has been a little lacking compared to Wladimir’s. However, Chisora is a lot better than the fighters that he’s been matched against thus far. He’s got the talent to beat anyone in the division.

His problem is that he’s been spoon fed mostly British fighters and hasn’t taken on the crème of the heavyweight division until now. His lack of experience won’t matter, because Chisora has the defensive ability to make Wladimir miss over and over again because of his head movement and bobbing & weaving style of fighting. Wladimir hates to miss with his punches for a number of reasons. He’s deathly afraid of getting countered. So if he thinks he’s going to get hit in return or if he thinks there’s a high possibility he’ll miss with a shot, he won’t bother to throw them.

This has been the case in many of Wladimir’s fights, in particular his bout against Sultan Ibragimov in 2008. If you look at that fight, you’ll notice that Wladimir threw nothing but jabs all night long. He was afraid to throw his left hook and right hands because he wasn’t sure if he could land it and was afraid to get over extended and tagged after a miss. Ibragimov totally shut Wladimir down in that fight, limiting his offense to nothing but jabs and pretty much nothing else. The reason why Ibragimov lost that fight was because he failed to throw any punches on his own. He was too busy fighting off his back foot and it cost him the fight.

Chisora is a much better fighter on offense, and he’s got good power and a great work rate. He’s going to make Wladimir miss with his shots with his head movement, and Wladimir is going to respond by shutting down his offense completely to avoid missing more shots and looking stupid. This is where Chisora will get Wladimir.

Once Wladimir stops throwing power shots, he’s going to be at the mercy of Chisora’s flurries, and I don’t see Wladimir’s jabs being able to fend off the furious attacks from Chisora. The British fighter is going to get low, get in close and pound Wladimir’s vulnerable chin. Without his power shots, Wladimir is a very average fighter. Chisora is going to be facing someone that it is little better than the British fighters that he’s been beating since he turned pro in 2007.
