senchenko45By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBA welterweight champion Vyacheslav Senchenko (33-1, 22 KO’s) will be fighting what he hopes to be an easy tune-up fight this Saturday against little known Argentinian journeyman (37-15-3, 18 KO’s) in a scheduled 10 round bout at the Donbass Arena in Donetsk, Ukraine.

This is a tune-up bout to get the 36-year-old Senchenko ready for his fight against Kell Brook on October 26th at the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield, Yorkshire, UK.

Senchenko is the “big name” that Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn had been talking about when speaking about his October bout. However, when fans heard that Hearn had a big name, they assumed that it was a relevant fighter among the very top of the division, not a guy that was stopped by Paulie Malignaggi in the 9th round last year in April like Senchenko was.

Senchenko rebounded from the loss to Malignaggi by stopping a ring rusty Ricky Hatton in the 9th round last November to send Hatton back into retirement. The sad thing about the Hatton-Senchenko fight was that Hatton hadn’t fought in 3 years, yet he was up on all three of the judges’ scorecards 77-76, 78-74 and 77-76 at the time that Senchenko stopped him with a simple body shot.

There’s not much to say about Jerez other than the fact that he seems to have a good chin, and that he’s been beaten by a number of well-known fighters during his 13-year career. Jerez has losses to the following fighters: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Anthony Mundine, Hector Saldivia, Leonard Bundu, Max Bursak, Cesar Rene Cuenca, Walter Matthysse, Sebastian Lujan and Lucas Matthysse.

As bad as Senchenko did against Hatton and Malignaggi, I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets beaten by Jerez. Senchenko is vulnerable against pretty much anyone that has a jab and halfway decent power.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Brook still winds up facing Senchenko even if he gets beaten by Jerez this Saturday.
