Tony Thompson battles Malik Scott in main event on October 30th

thompson323By Allan Fox: #9 WBC heavyweight contender Tony Thompson (40-5, 27 KOs) will be fighting 34-year-old Malik Scott (37-2-1, 13 KOs) in a scheduled 10 round fight in what shapes up to be a mismatch later this month on 10/30 on Premier Boxing Champions on Bounce TV in a fight that will take place at the Venue at UCF in Orlando, Florida.

The Thompson-Scott fight will be the main event on a card with unbeaten light welterweight Lydell Rhodes (23-0-1, 11 KOs) facing little known Sergey Lipinets (7-0, 6 KOs). Also on the card is a 147lb match between Javontae Starks (13-0, 7 KOs) and Samuel Figueroa (9-0, 4 KOs). Thompson vs. Scott isn’t exactly a great fight because there’s a difference in talent between them, and we’re still not talking about two heavyweights that appear to be going in anywhere in the division.

Thompson has twice fought for world titles against Wladimir Klitschko in the last four years, and on both occasions he was stopped.

Thompson, 43, comes into this fight in a much better position in terms of his career than Scott despite having lost two out of his last four fights in defeats to Carlos Takam and Kubrat Pulev. Scott lost to Deontay Wilder by a 1st round knockout in March of 2014, but he then bounced back with a one-sided 10 round decision win over former world title challenger Alex Leapai in beating him by a one-sided 10 round decision last year in October 2014. Scott hasn’t fought since then for some reason.

Thompson won his last fight against Odlanier Solis in stopping him in the 8th round last February in Antalya, Turkey. Solis, a 2004 Olympic heavyweight gold medalist from Cuba, really handicapped himself by coming into the fight weighing 271 ½ pounds for the Thompson fight. What’s hard to believe is that Solis weighed 200 pounds when he won the gold medal in the 2004 Olympics. He put on a lot of fat after he ended his amateur career in Cuba.

Thompson, 6’5”, still has the talent to beat a lot of heavyweights in the division despite his advanced age. He just doesn’t have the talent to beat the really good heavyweights. The only way that Thompson will likely get another world title shot is if he gets picked out in another voluntary defense by one of the champions.

Thus far, Wilder has shown no interest in facing him. Wilder would seem to be Thompson’s best bet for him eventually getting another crack at a world title. Wladimir has too wins over him, so there’s no point in Thompson waiting for him to get another fight against him because that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen.

“I’m not looking past Malik Scott because he’s an experienced and crafty fighter,” Thompson said. “I think most fighters will stay away from a style like Malik’s but everyone knows I will fight anyone.”

Scott isn’t all that crafty. He’s a pretty basic fighter that can be beaten if you go after him with hard shots and put pressure on him. He was stopped in the 6th round by Dereck Chisora in July of 2013. Scott was arguably robbed of a victory over Vyacheslav Glazkov in their fight in February 2013 in a fight that was ruled a 10 round draw.
