By Dan Ambrose: There is talk of lightweight contender and former featherweight and super featherweight champion Robert Guerrero (29-1, 18 KO’s) moving up two entire divisions to take on WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KO’s) in order to get the 28-year-old Guerrero a big money fight against Ortiz. Guerrero recently easily beat Australian Michael Katsidis earlier this month in a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision on the undercard of the Marcos Maidana vs. Erik Morales card on April 9th.

Guerrero has looked equally good in beating the likes of Vincente Escobedo, Joel Casamayor , Roberto David Arrienta and Malcolm Klassen in the past two years. With that said, having the 5’8″ Guerrero move up in weight to take on the southpaw slugger Ortiz might not be the best of ideas if you’re a fan of Guerrero.

Even though Ortiz was technically only one division above Guerrero at light welterweight until recently beating WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto on April 16th, Ortiz is still a much bigger fighter in terms of his frame and is a lot bigger puncher than Guerrero. For Guerrero to win, he’d have to get on the inside and try to outwork the hard hitting Ortiz. But the problem is Ortiz just showed in his last fight against Berto that he’s an awesome inside fighter with huge power and an ability to throw over 60 punches per round while in close.

I think Ortiz would eat Guerrero up on the inside, and not be bothered in the least by Guerrero’s much weaker shots. This fight has knockout written all over it. I think it would be an interesting fight on paper, but in reality Guerrero would be facing a lot of punishment against a big 160+ Ortiz.
