Image: Michael Katsidis Destroys Kevin MitchellBy Craig Macguinness: Saturday evening saw Kevin Mitchell’s 31-0 turn to 31-1 after Michael Katsidis (27-2, 22 KO’s) stopped him inside 3 rounds at Upton Park. Mitchell started off jabbing well trying to keep Katsidis at bay. While Katsidis started slowly for the first round working out Mitchell trying to draw Mitchell in for a counter punch it seemed, which was very surprising considering Katsidis’s style. All That changed in round 2 where Katsidis started to pressure Mitchell who didn’t seem to have the head movement or power to keep Katsidis at arms reach.

I myself was very worried seeing this round, how Mitchell looked slow on the back foot and throwing no meaningful punches to stop Katsidis’s advancements. Round 3 came and Katsidis landed several blows staggering mitchell who has never been down in his pro or amatuer carear. Mitchell tried clinching to buy some time but was obviously hurt with still 2 minutes to go.

Katsidis hurt Mitchell again with a powerful left hook and more painful combo’s forcing The ref to intervene. Being honest i thought mitchell would win this fight late on with a stop by cuts or on points it just shows you never know in boxing. Katsidis looked much bigger and stronger than Mitchell and Mitchell just didn’t seem to have the required power to keep Katsidis at arms reach.

Katsidis is a true warrior and has proved to never be underestimated he generates respect from fans all over with his pressure fighting and character. Katsidis some could say was unlucky to lose to a very close fight against Juan Diaz and got over excited against Joel Casamayor. I can see him going on to great things. I personally would like to see him move up in weight and take Amir khan on, as its becoming ever so dull seeing the standard of Amir khan’s recent opponents. I hope Kevin Mitchell can come back from this hes a great kid. I thought before the fight he had all the tools to compete at world level After Saturday he has still to prove he can compete with the best in a very tough weight class.
