The Alexander-Purdy fight is the co-feature bout on the Lamont Peterson vs. Lucas Matthysse card, but the way this fight looks on paper, it might have been better off buried in one of the earlier bouts of the night because I see this one as a dreadful mismatch due to the talent imbalance between the highly skilled and highly experienced Alexander facing a guy with an inflated ranking and resume in Purdy.
Purdy said this as quoted by Fightnews.com: “Yeah, I’m a big underdog, but I believe I can bring a big upset.”
I hate to be the one to break this to Purdy, but he’s the underdog because he lacks the talent to be considered the favorite.
Instead of bellyaching about Alexander’s holding, Purdy should be happy about it because it may save him from getting knocked out in this fight because if Alexander doesn’t hold, then that means he’s going to be swinging on him and I see him laying Purdy out once he does that.
Purdy has nothing in his past to get him ready for the talent he’ll be facing on Saturday night against Alexander. The best guys that Purdy has been in with, Colin Lynes and Denton Vassell, would both be schooled by Alexander. The thing is, both of those guys whipped Purdy.
That’s the predicament that Purdy is in on Saturday. Even the guys that beat him would be little more than fodder for the likes of Alexander.
Like I said, Purdy should be praying that Alexander holds him all night because that’ll at least save him a little from getting battered and beaten by the young and dare I say talented Alexander.
There are levels in boxing and Purdy is definitely on a lower order than Alexander.
It just burns me up when I see the sanctioning bodies giving fighters like Purdy an inflated ranking because it’s not fair to him, it’s not fair to Alexander that he has to waste his time with this fight, and it’s not fair to the boxing fans that’ll have to sit through this mismatch on Saturday night.
Purdy’s ranked #4 by the IBF, but when you watch this mismatch on Saturday, you’ll be wondering why the IBF had Purdy even ranked in their top 15 because this is going to be such a terrible mismatch.
