Julio Cesar Chavez disappointed in Ryan Garcia: “I’m not going to watch him anymore”

By Dan Ambrose: Boxing great Julio Cesar Chavez says he’s NOT going to be watching “anymore” of Ryan Garcia fights after the way he lost to Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis last Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Chavez, 60, says the body shot that knocked Ryan down in seventh round wasn’t even a punch.

In other words, Chavez  (107-6-2, 86 KOs) doesn’t understand why Ryan (23-1, 19 KOs) went down, and he doesn’t know why he didn’t at least attempt to get back up to continue fighting.

Many fans have noted how Ryan bounded to his feet, showing no signs of distress after the referee reached the ten count.

They felt that if Ryan was that badly hurt that he needed to be counted out, he should have continued to show pain on his face after he got back to his feet. That wasn’t the case, though, as Ryan, 24, looked fine.

There’s a massive difference between the pedigree that Chavez had as a fighter compared to Ryan’s. Chavez was fighting better opposition during the early portion of his career than Ryan, and he was busier. Ryan fought only twice in 2022, once in 2021 and in 2020. In comparison, Chavez fought four times a year when he was similar, and he was much busier than earlier.

It wasn’t even a punch. I’m not going to watch him anymore. I don’t want to watch any more Ryan Garcia fights; count me out,” said Julio Cesar Chavez to the media in reaction to Ryan Garcia’s seventh round knockout loss to Gervonta Davis last Saturday night.

“A lot of people are talking about Ryan [Garcia] quit. When it comes to boxing, a lot of people don’t know what they’re talking about. That’s just period,” said WBC light welterweight champion Regis Prograis on social media.

“If you’ve never been in the ring and never been hit, shut the f**k up because you don’t know what you’re talking about. Listen, from experience, when you get hit with a body shot, and your arm is all the way extended, and you get hit at the same time, that s**t hurt, bro.

“I don’t know how Ryan felt. I don’t know how hard Tank hit him, but when you get hit like that, the s**t hurt. It don’t even have to be that hard with an eight-ounce glove on. But Tank timed that s**t perfectly and hit him when his arm was extended.

“Please shut up, people. That dude didn’t f***g quit. He just got stopped. That’s it. Don’t make excuses,” said Prograis in coming to the defense of Ryan Garcia.
