He thought he was qualified for the 2000 Mexican Olympic team but was informed he was too young to compete in the 2000 summer games in Sydney, Australia. He decided he didn’t want to wait four more years so he turned pro at the age of 16. Diaz made his professional boxing debut on June 23, 2000 with a first round TKO win over Rafael Ortiz. Diaz won all of his first five fights by KO or TKO.

On November 22, 2003, Diaz won the WBO youth lightweight title with a sixth round stoppage of journeyman Joel Perez.

On July 17th, 2004, Diaz defeated Mongolian Lakva Sim for the WBA lightweight title by way of a unanimous decision. Diaz went on to fend the title seven times. On April 8th, 2006, Diaz defended his title against undefeated Jose Miguel Cotto, (brother of Miguel Cotto). Diaz defeated Cotto in a 12 round unanimous decision. On November 14th, 2006, Diaz successfully defended his title for the fifth time in another 12 round unanimous decision against Fernando Angulo of Ecuador.

On April 28th, 2007, at the Foxwoods resort in Mashantucket, Connecticut, Diaz successfully defended his title against Acelino Freitas. After eight brutal rounds Freitas forfeited the fight when he refused to answer the bell for the ninth round. Diaz unified the WBO lightweight championship with the WBA lightweight title.

On October 13th, 2007, in Chicago, Illinois, Juan Dian stopped Julio Diaz in nine rounds for the IBF lightweight title.

Juan Diaz’ first loss of his career was on March 8th, 2008 in Cancun, Mexico when he lost a split decision to Nate Campbell, Diaz’ IBF, WBO, and WBA lightweight titles were on the line. This fight ended Diaz’ undefeated streak of 33 wins.
