David Tua – Is he a future champion?

By Ronnie Jordan: Most would agree the heavyweight scene has been a little uninspiring over the past 6 or 7 years. It’s been ignored by many and even at times ridiculed by fans and writers alike. Recently however there seems to be renewed interest. People are discussing future fights, generating a buzz and excitement that’s undoubtedly spreading!

Granted most fans, and some writers! seem to be expressing unmitigated biased opinions and seeming ability to predict the future. Possibly motivated by national pride or maybe personal grudges. But at least there talking.

I’d go as far as saying it’s gone from, the most ignored to one of the most talked about divisions in boxing. It may be clouded judgment from us boxing fans, that we believe the klitschko’s can actually be beat. But there are a few heavyweights out there who are giving food for thought. David Haye has excited some and angered others but he certainly provokes a reaction.

Odlanier Solis looks great with some convincing recent wins that has some predicting he has what it takes. There’s Povetkin and Boystov who both look like tough guys and decent fighters. Watching these guys they have all dominated so far and to me there showing a lot more gile, hunger and actual ability than the recent Klitschko victims.

Another fighter worth a mention is David Tuamonator Tua. The former champ has made an explosive comeback with a devastating knockout of Aussie tough man Shane Cameron.

David Tua made his pro debut way back in 1992 and has steamrolled his way to a 50 fight 43ko and 3 defeats career. Not too many records compare to that, but when you analyze his career he hasn’t beaten anyone you would call world class. He’s made a career of looking incredible against beatable guys. Not too dissimilar to Mike Tyson.

Tua’s defining fights where against Chris Byrd and Lennox Lewis. Lewis managed to nullify his attack and dominated from distance and Byrd simply out boxed him. Tua’s obvious disadvantage is his short stature. At only 5’10” Tua has no right fighting at heavyweight, but it’s the fact that he’s one of the hardest hitters in boxing history that has made him so formidable. Also he has such great speed for a man of his build that often after knocking people out he and still gets home with three or four shots before they hit the canvas.

The trouble with facing either Klitschko is their ability to nullify opponents like Lewis did. The chance of Tua connecting with a hard enough shot to the head with a guy standing 8 or 9 inches above him is slim. Especially against someone with great defense and movement. He may be able to rough them up and attack the body but its unlikely that would give much success either. David Tua is everything this heavyweight scene needs but just doesn’t possess the attributes needed against the Kitschkos.

What I would love to see is Tua vs. either Solis, Haye, Boystov or Povetkin. There all fighters that Tua could potentially beat. The fight that stands out from a fans perspective would be David Haye. Even the Haye haters would tune in to that one. Probably in the hope that Tua would floor him. The good thing about this fight is neither one posses the boxing ability to win by convincing decision. Both guys natural instinct is to attack!!! With the power that both posses it word mean fireworks. We get treated to wars like that in the lower weight classes but rarely at heavyweight. Lets prey that match up can happen one day.
