Daniel Ponce de Leon vs. Adrien Broner: Is Broner the new Golden Boy hype job?

By Francisco Hernandez: Golden Boy appears to be ready to hype up fighter Adrien Broner as the next African-American star in boxing when lightweight Broner faces smaller featherweight fighter Daniel Ponce de Leon in the undercard of Saul Alvarez vs. Mathew Hatton.

The fact that Daniel Ponce de Leon is a smaller fighter may go over the head of most casual fans, who will believe Broner is impressive because he has defeated a big name opponent, that is if Broner wins the fight.

Golden Boy may no longer see any value in fighter Daniel Ponce de Leon, and will begin using him as a stepping stone even putting him in against bigger fighters like Adrien Broner. Daniel Ponce de Leon a Native-American of the Tarahumara tribe is giving up too much of an advantage to his bigger opponent Broner, if they were fighting at featherweight, no doubt Ponce de Leon would kayo Broner, but at lightweight and with no previous fights in this division, the Tarahumara warrior will not have the same power. It will be an uphill battle for Daniel.

What will Adrien Broner prove if he gets a win against the smaller Ponce de Leon? That he is capable of fighting smaller fighters from the featherweight division. If Adrien Broner wants to be more than the new hype job, he needs to fight real lightweights with names. Jorge Linares, Antonio de Marco, Robert Guerrero, Michael Katsidis, John Molina, are just a few names he can start with.
