gomez78778By Jim Dower: Fighting for the first time in two years, former two-time world title challenger Alfonso Gomez (24-6-2, 12 KO’s) defeated the stronger but less busier Ed Paredes (35-4-1, 23 KO’s) by a 10 round unanimous decision on Wednesday night at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Paredes, 29, was given credit for two knockdowns, one in the 4th and the other in the 6th, but neither of them seemed legitimate.

Gomez’s win snaps a 13-fight win streak by the 29-year-old Paredes that stretches all the way back to 2009. Unfortunately, all of the wins came against weaker opposition.

Despite having a big advantage in power, Paredes failed to take advantage of it by throwing enough punches. He was throwing single shots all night long and looking to score a one-punch knockout. There was no adjustments made by Paredes later in the fight when it was clear that he wasn’t going to be able to get a knockout. He just kept loading up and seemingly hoping to land a big enough punch to get Gomez out of there.

In the 9th round, Gomez hurt Paredes with a chopping right hand followed by a right uppercut. For the remainder of the round, Paredes was backing up and looking shaken. In between the 9th and 10th rounds, Paredes looked like a beaten man. Both eyes were swollen up and he was gassed out.

Referee Kenny Bayless appeared to have an off night in blowing both knockdown calls. Luckily for Gomez, the judges gave him enough rounds to offset the bogus knockdowns. When you see fights like this with a referee blowing two knockdown calls, it just tells you that boxing needs instant replay to protect fighters from losing fights.

With careers going downhill after defeats, it’s important to have a backup system in place in case the referee makes a mistake like what we saw twice tonight with Bayless giving Pardes two knockdowns.

Other boxing results on the card:

Joseph Diaz UD 10 Ramiro Robles
Diego De La Hoya TKO 5 Miguel Tamayo
Joet Gonzalez TKO2 David Clark
Oscar Negrete UD 4 Carlos Medina
