Image: Adrien Broner #1 rated lightweight in Ring ratingsBy Scott Gilfoid: The talented WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) is #1 in the Ring Magazine lightweight ratings, although he’s still not recognized as the full lightweight champion just yet. However, it’s still a great to see the 23-year-old Broner recognized by the Ring to be the top lightweight in the division after defeating Antonio DeMarco by an 8th round TKO last Saturday night.

Here are the Ring’s current lightweight rankings:

#1. Adrien Broner
#2. Miguel Vazquez
#3. Antonio DeMarco
#4. Ricky Burns
#5. Richard Abril
#6. Gavin Rees
#7. Sharif Bogere
#8. Kevin Mitchell
#9. John Murray
#10. Raymundo Beltran

I don’t really agree with those rankings at all, although I do see Broner as #1.The Ring has too many fluff lightweights ranked as I’m concerned.

Here’s my rankings:

#1. Adrien Broner
#2. Richard Abril
#3. Antonio DeMarco
#4. Sharif Bogere
#5. Miguel Vazquez
#6. Sergio Thompson
#7. Hank Lundy
#8. Jose Gonzalez
#9. Miguel Acosta
#10. Ricky Burns

I don’t consider Burns as good enough to beat the likes of Acosta, Broner, Abril, DeMarco, Vazquez, Gonzalez, Thompson, Lundy and Bogere, hence I have ranked below all of those guys. As far as Murray and Gavin Rees, I don’t rate them as top 10 lightweights.

Broner is a real talent and his win over DeMarco, who I previously felt was the best lightweight in the division, tells me that he simply unbeatable at this weight. Broner beat a really good fighter in DeMarco and did it in such a manner that there’s little question that Broner is now the best fighter in the entire division.

In beating DeMarco, Broner showed inside fighting skills, power and accuracy that are going to make him hard to beat. He’s so heavy handed and accurate that few fighter are going to be able to stand up to his big shots. At the same time his defense makes him really hard to hit. You’re not going to be able to get in a war with him because he’s so effective and picking off shots.
