By Dan Ambrose: Danny Jacobs will not be fighting Jermall Charlo before he gets an eventual fight against the winner of the Gennady “GGG” Golovkin vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez rematch. Jacobs’s new promoter Eddie Hearn says the unbeaten Charlo (26-0, 20 KOs) is not in the plans that he has for Jacobs (32-2, 29 KOs). That’s not a fight that Hearn wants for Jacobs.

Charlo, 6’0”, is roughly the same height as Jacobs with the same reach as him. In terms of size and power, Charlo would be the perfect fight for Jacobs. Of course, Jacobs wouldn’t have the size advantage over Charlo like he’s been having throughout his career. If Jacobs is really the best middleweight in the world, as Hearn says he is, then he should be able to beat Charlo without any problems. Hearn’s reluctance to put Jacobs in with Charlo SCREAMS fear on his part. Charlo could spoil the party for Jacobs and Hearn with their dreams of fighting Canelo, David Lemieux and Golovkin.

“When you meet Danny Jacobs, he screams superstar to me,” said Hearn to ES News Reporting. “I had him beating Triple G by a round. Therefore, he’s the best middleweight in the world. That’s the target. That’s 100 percent the target,” said Hearn about a rematch against Golovkin being the target for Jacobs.

Jacobs is going to need to sit and wait if he wants Golovkin. I hope that Jacobs and Hearn don’t focus too much on the Golovkin fight while ignoring the other top guys like Charlo and Sergiy Derevyancnenko, because it might give the appearance that they just want a payday and nothing else. Jacobs has got to be able to beat the other guys at the top of the division instead of him being given title shots that he hasn’t earned.

“If it wasn’t a draw last week, we’d be looking at that fight sooner rather than later,” said Hearn about the Canelo-Golovkin fight turning out to be a draw. ”Now the plan is for Danny to fight in November. I like the Lemieux fight for Danny Jacobs. I think that’s a great fight, and ten he should fight the winner of Canelo against Triple G. That’s an obvious fight. The fight against Golovkin, many had it for Danny Jacobs. That’s an obvious rematch. The Canelo fight is there win or lose. I don’t think Charlo is necessarily a target for what we’re doing and thinking right now. Danny Jacobs has proven time and time again that he’s willing to get in there with anyone. I think the Charlo fight can happen, and the Billy Joe Saunders fight can happen. First of all, it’s time to get Danny Jacobs back in the ring after the Golovkin fight and get a good solid win in November,” said Hearn.

It’s definitely time for Jacobs to get back inside the ring. He should have already fought a long time ago, as he hasn’t fought since last March. That’s not Hearn’s fault obviously, but he could have brought him back before November. The fight the fight that Jacobs has scheduled against Luis Arias for November 11 is one that could have been scheduled for an earlier date. It’s not as if it’s a match-up that the casual boxing fans will be looking forward to. The casual fans will likely not even know about the fight existing. Hearn can pour money into promoting the Jacobs-Arias fight, but I don’t see him doing that. As far as promotion goes, Jacobs vs. Arias will be advertised on HBO, and that’s probably about it. Hearn should have scheduled that fight for October instead of November.

“As a fight fan, I like the Lemieux fight. Lemieux is very exciting to watch. He’s on the same network and with Golden Boy, it shouldn’t be too difficult to make this fight,” said Hearn.

Even if Jacobs beats Lemieux, it probably won’t do much for his popularity. Lemieux was already exposed by Golovkin 2 years ago in 2015. Hearn is a little late. Jacobs isn’t going to get much of a bounce from beating Lemieux if he can even get that fight, which I doubt. Hearn should be focusing on trying to get more attainable fights for Jacobs rather than talking endlessly about how h wants the Jacobs vs. Lemieux fight. I don’t see that fight happening.

Charlo is someone that Hearn could probably get if he made a big offer to him to fight Lemieux; the same with Derevyanchenko. Those are the guys that Hearn should be trying to get for Jacobs. Hearn feels confident that he’s going to be able to get the fight for Jacobs. Hearn doesn’t say how much he’s willing to offer Lemieux’s promoters at Golden Boy Promotions to get Lemieux to take the fight with Jacobs, but he’d better be ready to dig deep. Golden Boy isn’t going to let Lemieux fight Jacobs for chicken feed. It doesn’t matter how much Hearn or HBO would like to see the Jacobs vs. Lemieux fight. Golden Boy is trying to rebuild Lemieux’s career after his loss to Gennady Golovkin.

Jacobs has a fight scheduled on November 11 against Luis Arias (19-0, 9 KOs) on HBO from the Nassau Colisseum in Uniondale, New York.

”Ultimately, after May the 5th, that’s when they’re due to rematch, we signed to HBO for that fight, so that’s the one we want,” said Hearn about wanting to match Jacobs against Golovkin after the Canelo-Golovkin rematch.
