By Geraldo Granados: According to long time sports journalist Fernando Schwartz from AGENDA FOX Sports, Canelo Alvarez rejected the special belt that the WBC was to present to the winner of the Canelo Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr fight next May 6 at Las Vegas. Not only had that but according to Schwartz, Canelo also had a page bought by the WBC in which the special Huichol belt was to be shown inside the official program to be removed.
The WBC has been highly criticized in the past for giving to Canelo Alvarez an easy rout the title in two occasions. Back in March 2011 Canelo was given his first shot at a title, the vacant WBC super-welter strap without even he or Mathew Hatton have been ranked in the division. Two years later Alvarez was allowed to unify against Floyd Mayweather Jr.
As the reader already knows the WBC allowed Canelo to dispute their middleweight title against then Champion Miguel Cotto, with the condition for the winner to defend the title against Gennady Golovkin. Canelo asked for an interim fight to get ready for GGG and was allowed to defend the middleweight strap against a welter named Amir Khan who had never fought or had being ranked at 160. Then after endless time extensions given to negotiate, Canelo finally decided to vacate the belt instead of fighting against Golovkin his mandatory challenger.
If this arrogant attitude from Canelo results to be totally true then it can only mean that Canelo has no gratitude for a boxing organization from which he has received total support in the past.
There was no need to heat up even more the Chavez Jr vs Canelo bout, but this can only add attention from Canelo haters who will be eager to see him lose against a likable foe named Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
This issue reminds me of Ridick Bowe throwing the WBC belt into a bin. For me it is a real shame to see Canelo assume such arrogant attitude, but I guess that money and fame can change the most humble person. I think that Canelo should remember that what goes up also goes down. But what about the reader, do you think that this can end well for Canelo?
