By Sean McDaniel: Promoter Eddie Hearn is hoping to reach a deal for the Kell Brook vs. Errol Spence fight by end of this week for a fight on May 20th or the 27th. That would give the fighters plenty of time to get ready for the match, and to give time for the promoters to market it. Brook had an eye injury in his last fight against Gennady Golovkin.

Having the fight in May will give Brook eight full months from the time of his last fight against Golovkin. Hopefully that’s enough time for Brook to come back from the eye injury.
The leading possibility for the location is at Bramall Lane in Sheffield.

That’s where the Brook-Spence fight has the biggest possibility of drawing a large crowd. Spence, 26, isn’t well known enough for a fight between him and Brook to bring in a lot of fans in London. If the fight were to be staged in the U.S, it would be a tough sell. Neither fighter has a large following in the U.S as of now. Spence could become a future attraction at some point in his career, but he’s not a big enough star right now to bring in a large crowd comparable to what Brook can do in the UK.

“We’re talking to Bramall Lane about it as well, end of May, 20th or the 27th. We have talked about a fight for a while there and I think this one makes sense,” said Hearn to skysports.com.

Unless the Brook-Spence fight goes to a purse bid, Spence arguably isn’t in the best position to dictate where the fight will take place. It shouldn’t matter that Spence may have to do some traveling. Spence has amateur experience in the 2012 Olympics, and he’s accustomed to traveling. Spence tends to score a lot of knockouts.

The chances are good that he’ll be able to end the Brook fight before it goes to the scorecards in May. Brook has two strikes against him with him having to come down from 160 to make the 147lb limit for the Spence fight, and his eye injury that he’s coming back from.
