By Allan Fox: Floyd Mayweather Jr. has been retired for a little over one year, but he’s now gaining a great deal of attention in criticizing IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin this week. Some boxing fans believe that Mayweather’s criticism of Golovkin is an indirect way for him to challenge Triple G.

Are we seeing Mayweather testing the waters for a comeback against Golovkin? You can’t rule it out. Golovkin is the only fighter in the sport that Mayweather has any chance of coming back to get the nine-figure payday that he’s seeking in a comeback.

If Mayweather is testing the waters to see how much interest is generated from a fight between him and Golovkin, he’s going about it the right way by criticizing him. In this week alone, a great deal of boxing fans has shown interest in the idea of wanting to see a fight between Golovkin and Mayweather.

We already saw Mayweather beat Saul “Canelo” Alvarez by a 12 round unanimous decision three years ago in 2013. Golovkin is still there for Mayweather to prove himself against as a boxing great. If Mayweather could come back to fight Golovkin before going into a permanent retirement, it would be a huge feather for Mayweather to put in his cap.

Mayweather said to Fighthype.com:

“A guy like [Kell] Brook exposed him. Nephew, you ain’t telling me nothing new,” Mayweather said in response to his nephew telling him that he would have beaten Golovkin. “He’s a guy that is straight up and down. [He] Really [has] no special effects. He’s got good punching power, but no special effects. You guys already know what would have happened if it was me [facing Golovkin instead of Brook].”

It appears to some boxing fans that Mayweather wants to fight Golovkin. With the way he’s indirectly challenging him by saying he could beat him, it comes across like he’s challenging the hard hitting Golovkin. If that’s the case, you can beat that Golovkin will accommodate him.

Golovkin already said that he would come down to 154 to fight Mayweather at junior middleweight where he previously held the WBA/WBC titles. Mayweather fought and beat Canelo Alvarez at junior middleweight in 2013. If Mayweather was willing to fight Canelo at junior middleweight, then he should be willing to fight Golovkin at that weight as well.

Mayweather has a high asking price of $100 million for him to come out of retirement to go for win No.50. You can argue that one reason why there hasn’t been any movement from the networks to give Mayweather the 9-figure payday that he’s asking for is because there’s no one in the 147 to 154 pound weight classes that can generate the huge amount of money that he wants. However, Golovkin could be the one fighter that Mayweather could make huge money fighting.

If Mayweather isn’t challenging Golovkin, then all you can think of is perhaps he’s got some jealously about the appreciation and love that he’s getting from the boxing fans. Mayweather has been replaced by Golovkin, not by Canelo Alvarez among the casual boxing fans in the U.S.
