If Golovkin getting $10M, how much is Canelo getting?

By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions revealed to the media last Saturday night that he had offered Gennady “GGG” Golovkin an eight-figure offer to fight his guy Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. De La Hoya complained that Golovkin’s management hadn’t called him back to respond about the offer, which De La Hoya seems to believe is a fair one. Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffer reportedly said that the offer from De La Hoya wasn’t enough, according to RingTV.

“There were some preliminary discussions,” said Loeffler to RingTV.com about a fight between Canelo and Golovkin. “But nothing of substance that was turned down. (Golovkin) would have fought Canelo last May if that would have been possible.”

The question that is in the minds of many boxing fans is how much would Canelo be making off the Golovkin fight? If Golovkin is getting between $10 million to $12 million, then how much will Canelo’s take be? If De La Hoya isn’t receiving a response from Golovkin’s management, then it might be a sign that they feel that it’s anywhere close to parity. De La Hoya said that Golovkin receive and eight-figure payday, but he failed to tells the fans how much Canelo would make and what percentage of the revenue it would be.

I’m sure if De La Hoya told the fans that it was 55-45 split, the fans would be sympathetic to him for not getting a response from Golovkin. But if the spit is somewhere along the lines of 95-5 or 90-10 in favor of Canelo, then it’s only obvious why Team Golovkin isn’t calling De La Hoya back, because they would see his offer as a big joke and completely unfair.

You have to look at the Canelo-Golovkin fight from the angle of what Golovkin brings to the table. If a typical Canelo fight brings in just 300,000 PPV buys on HBO, then it doesn’t make sense to give Golovkin a small cut of the revenue if he helps bump those numbers up to over 2 million to 4 million buys. If all Golovkin is getting is $10 million in a fight that generate potentially over $300 million, then it’s a waste of time on Triple G’s part to agree to that, because he would be getting only a small portion of the money that he helps bring in. When you have a fight like this that brings in a ton of extra pay-per-view buys due to your opponent, you’ve got to make it close to 50-50 in order to get that opponent to want to sign.

“I didn’t want to talk about any other offers that we had made to anyone else,” De La Hoya said. “I know you know what I’m talking about. So, 30 days ago I made an offer to GGG and his people. I made an eight-figure offer. I believe it’s an offer that was two, three, four times what he’s ever made and haven’t heard back. And that’s the bottom line.” All I need is for GGG and his people to at least call us back and negotiate and to take the offer. GGG has said that he’s not a businessman and he’s said publicly that Canelo is going to offer him $2 million. Well, guess what? There’s an eight-figure number on the table for Golovkin. Sign the contract and let’s stop with this nonsense.”

if De La Hoya and Canelo want the fight against Golovkin, then they’ll need to raise the offer to him. It makes sense for Golovkin to be paid a cut that reflects how many extra PPV buys that he helps bring in for the fight. That’s the whole problem. If Golovkin isn’t going to get to share fairly in the revenue that he helps bring in, then we might not see the fight ever take place between him and Canelo. That’s unfortunate, because a fight between Golovkin and Canelo would be huge news for the boxing world. It would be like another Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao fight. I cannot see any other fight out there for years to come that can compare to it. You can’t say that the Andre Ward vs. Sergey Kovalev fight will do as well as the Canelo-Golovkin fight. The excitement about that fight pales in comparison. That’s why you would expect that Team Golovkin would be looking to get the fairest deal possible from Golden Boy Promotions for a fight against Canelo.

I personally think a 55-45 split would be a fair deal with Canelo getting a little bit more to reflect him being the PPV attraction right now. But I don’t think we’re going to see the fight happen if Golden Boy is looking to have Golovkin take a small slice of the financial pie. I don’t think it’s ever going to happen.

Loeffler seems to be open minded about the fight taking place, but I don’t think he’s going to agree to Golovkin getting less than a 55-45 deal, which is what he would have received if the fight had taken place earlier this year when Canelo was the WBC middleweight title. He chose to vacate the title in a move that many fans saw as a way of trying to get a bigger cut of the revenue for the fight than the 55-45 split.
