By Allan Fox: Floyd Mayweather Sr. thinks his son Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26 KOs) could return to the ring in search of his 50th win, and he’d like for him to pick former four division world champion Adrien “The Problem” Broner, who he used to be friends with but not anymore after the two had a reported falling out.

Floyd Sr. says he wants to see his son retire because he feels he has nothing to prove any longer, and he’s concerned about his reflexes not being what they were before. Mayweather has been out of the ring for the last 11 months since beating Andre Berto last September.

Broner is currently in jail in Ohio, but he’s expected to be getting out soon. If Mayweather is interested in that fight, then he can certainly look to put it together after “The Problem” Broner gets out of jail.

I’m not sure how well a fight between Mayweather and Broner would do on pay-per-view. Broner has never been a PPV fighter and a fight between them might not bring in many PPV buys.

“If he’s going to make a comeback, pick the right opponent and then shut it down,” Snr said to Helen Yee Sports. “Call it quits and leave that part of the sport alone. I know who I’d like to see him fight. Broner. They used to be friends – not anymore.”

Broner was beaten by Shawn Porter in 2015 and Marcos Maidana in 2013. Mayweather wouldn’t get a ton of credit if he were to beat Broner too, because he’s not seen as the best in the 140 and 147lb divisions. Mayweather would do better to fight a rematch against Manny Pacquiao or look to fight someone like Terence Crawford. A fight between them would do well. However, Crawford and Pacquiao are both with Top Rank, and It’s unclear whether Mayweather woul want to work with them again after his experiences in dealing with them last year in his ‘Fight of the Century against Pacquiao.

“My understanding was that Floyd was coming back, but now we have to wait and see,” Mayweather Sr. said. “I wouldn’t advise him to continue to fight. Why? He has enough money and he’s smart with it. He has nothing more to prove. There’s no reason to keep fighting. Every year your reflexes are going to give – they’re going to stop.”

Mayweather likely has more than enough to come back and still beat Broner if he wants to follow his father Floyd Sr’s wishes in taking that fight. That’s not a fight that would likely sell well though. If Mayweather is still convinced that he needs to get a nine-figure payday for his next fight, then he could be in for a huge disappointment when he discovers the hard way that there likely isn’t a network out there that is willing to pay him $100 million to fight again, especially against a guy like Broner.

To get the kind of money that Mayweather wants to satisfy his wishes, he would have to fight guys like Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Manny Pacquiao or Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. Asking Mayweather to fight Golovkin would be the equivalent of asking him to take a spaceship to planet Venus and land on the planet and walk around on the blazing hot 864 degree surface for a while. Mayweather is not going to entertain the idea of getting inside the ring with Golovkin even if it means a ton of money.

It’s too dangerous of a fight for Mayweather. But I think there would be a network that would be willing to shell out a ton of money for a Mayweather vs. Golovkin fight, because it would be one of the rare fights during Mayweather’s long career where he would be the underdog rather than the favorite. But at least Mayweather would earn his $100 million, which you can’t say he did in the horrible to watch Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight last year.

A lot of boxing fans saw that fight is a real rip off both in terms of the cost of the over-priced fight, and for the performance from the two fighters. Both guys looked like they were just going through the motions and not trying to win in an impressive way by taking chances to entertain the many boxing fans that purchased the fight on PPV.
