By Eric Baldwin: Trainer Kenny Porter says he’s 1000 percent sure that Errol Spence Jr. (21-0, 18 KOs) will be winning the International Boxing Federation welterweight title soon whether it be against IBF champion Kell Brook or someone else if he vacates the title after his match next month against Gennady Golovkin. Kenny says that Spence won’t be fighting his son Shawn Porter for the vacant IBF title.

Spence, 26, defeated Leonard Bundu by a 6th round knockout on August 21 in their IBF welterweight title eliminator to become the mandatory challenger to Kell Brook. Spence has already called out Brook for him to come back down after his fight against Golovkin, but it’s unclear if he’ll do so.

Brook is taking a wait and see type of approach. He wants to find out how well he’ll do against Golovkin before he decides whether to come back own to 147 or not. Brook will likely try to come back down to 147 if he gets beaten really badly by Golovkin.

“He put on an excellent performance,” said Kenny Porter to Fighthype.com about Spence’s recent win over Bundu. “He looked great. “He is about to win a world championship. One day, there may be a great fight with him and Shawn Porter. He’s getting ready to win a world championship; I’m 1000% sure of that. We’re not going to be the guy that he fights for his world title,” said Kenny Porter about Spence.

If Brook bails if/when he gets knocked out by Golovkin, then Spence could wind up facing unbeaten #3 IBF Konstantin Ponomarev. Trainer Abel Sanchez is confident that Ponomarev will fight Spence for the vacant IBF title after Brook vacates the belt, and he thinks he’ll beat Spence. I’m not sure if that’s going to happen, but Sanchez seems to think it will. I seriously doubt that Ponomrarev will elect to fight Spence for the IBF title, because he had the chance to fight him for the mandatory spot and he didn’t take the fight. If he passed it up once, then you can bet that he’ll pass the opportunity up a second time.

Spence would be all wrong for Brook to fight after his fight against Golovkin. Even if Brook beats Golovkin, he’s going to take so much punishment during the fight that he’s not going to be in great shape to take off a lot of the muscle weight that he put on in order to come back down to 147 to fight Spence. Brook will not only be weight drained from coming back own in weight, but he’ll also likely be worn down from the fight against Triple G.

Spence looks to have the most talent in the IBF’s top 15. The only guy that can potentially give Spence a test is Brook, and even he might not be good enough. Brook was barely making the welterweight limit in the past. But now that he’s gained all that weight to fight Golovkin, it’s going to be extremely hard for him to lose the weight to get back down to 147.
