Chisora offers to fight Whyte

By Scott Gilfoid: British heavyweight Dillian Whyte (18-1, 14 KOs) is all bent out of shape after Sam Sexton opted not to fight him on October 7, but thankfully, Dereck Chisora (25-6, 17 KOs) has offered to step in for him. I’m not sure that Whyte is eager to take the fight against Chisora though. Whyte wanted Sexton (23-3, 9 KOs) for some reason. Chisora, 32, is a much tougher out for Whyte than someone like Sexton, whose career hasn’t looked the same since he was stopped in the 9th round by Chisora in 2010.

Wyte is fighting on the undercard of the Ricky Burns vs. Kiryl Relikh card on October 7 at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland.

“Don’t worry man, I’ll take his place,” Chisora said to skysports.com. “Say ‘let’s do it’ and I’ll whoop your [expletive], it’s easy. Easy pickings bro, that’s it. Tell your boys to holler at my boys and then we’ll get it done. Don’t worry about Sam, I’ll fight you.”

Even if the 28-year-old Whyte was agreeable to fighting Chisora, which I don’t know if he is, I doubt that his promoter Eddie Hearn would let him take that fight. Whyte doesn’t appear to have full power in his left shoulder after having surgery on it last year. Whyte has fought twice since coming back from the surgery in wins over Ivica Bacurin and David Allen, and the power just does not seem to be there for him in that shoulder.

While it’s been around eight months since Whyte’s surgery, you would have to think that the power would have returned by now if it’s going to return at all. The fact that Whyte isn’t punching with authority with his left shoulder seems to suggest that his power might not return. I mean, looking at the way that Whyte fought in his last bout against David Allen on July 30, there’s no way that he would beat Chisora in my view. I don’t think it would be even close.

Chisora can punch with both hands, and Whyte can’t punch with his right and not at all with his left hand. Whyte doesn’t have any jab to speak of. As such, I think Chisora would have a field day in working over Whyte if that fight gets made, which I don’t think it will. Eddie Hearn is a pretty shrewd promoter, and he seems to know the limitations of his fighters. I cannot see him giving the green light to Whyte for a fight against Chisora.

First of all, Whyte’s power in his left shoulder hasn’t returned. Secondly, Chisora is not one of Hearn’s stable fighters in his Matchroom Sport stable. He fights for Sauerland Events. I think Hearn is saving Whyte for an eventually rematch against IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua in 2017 or 2018. Their fight together last year in December 2015 brought in a lot of pay-per-view buys on Sky Box Office. For that reason, I see Hearn continuing to feed Whyte cream puffs until he can feed him to Joshua. It won’t even be a fight at this point between those guys, because without his once powerful left hook, Whyte would be at the mercy of Joshua. Heck, Whyte would be at the mercy of Chisora.

I think Chisora beats Whyte easily right now, because he has nothing to keep him off of him. Before Whyte’s shoulder injury, I saw him as a bigger, stronger version of Chisora. The two differences between the two fighters back then is the fact that Chisora could punch with either hand and he had good stamina. Even when Whyte was at his best, he was just a good puncher with his left hand and he had poor stamina. Now that Whyte no longer has his left hand working at full strength, he’s a very mediocre fighter.

“This is the problem with British boxing. There’s guys like Lamb (sic) Sexton out there who says he wants to fight, he wants to do this, he wants to do that,” said Whyte about Sexton to skysports.com.

I don’t understand why Whyte wants to fight the 32-year-old Sexton so badly. If he can get a fight against Chisora, I see that as a far better fight. Of course, it’s not such a great fight for Whyte at this point in his career, but he at least has the option of fighting a decent opponent.

Chisora will be fighting Drazan Janjanin (13-7, 12 KOs) in an eight round fight next month on September 10 at the Hovet in Stockholm, Sweden.
