By Jim Dower: Unbeaten WBA featherweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (32-0-1, 18 KOs) made weight on Friday in weighing at 125.5 pounds for his title defense against former IBF/WBA super bantamweight champion Carl Frampton (22-0, 14 KOs) on Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The 29-year-old Frampton weighed in at 125.25lbs.

The 5’7 1/2″ Santa Cruz, 27, will be looking to use his seven inch and 2 1/2″ height advantage to beat the 5’5″ Frampton on Saturday night. Frampton doesn’t like the idea of being the underdog in the fight, because he feels that the things tht he’s done in the past in his career shoud equate to him being an even bet to win the fight. However, Framtpon hasn’t looked good in his last two fights against Scott Quigg and Alejandro Gonzalez, two fighters that had the size advantage over him like Santa Cruz will have on Saturday night.

Santa Cruz may move back down in weight to super bantamweight rather than stay at featherweight win or lose. There are a lot of big punchers in this weight class, and he doesn’t appear to have the right frame to fight in this weight class compared to at 122. For his part, Frampton isn’t in the same position as Santa Cruz to pick and choose whether he can move back down to 122 again. Frampton has clearly outgrown the super bantamweight division, and he has to fight at featherweight because it’d become too hard for him to make the limit for the 12lb division. It’s possible that Frampton may have a chance of thought if he starts getting run over by bigger 126lb fighters in the division like Jesus Cuellar, Oscar Valdez, Lee Selby and Matias C. Adrian Rueda.
