By Dan Ambrose: Former two-division world champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (33-4-1, 18 KOs) will be fighting next month against 33-year-old Argentinian David Emanuel Peralta (25-2-1, 14 KOs) on August 27 in a 10 round scheduled bout at the Honda Center, in Anaheim, California. This is the first fight for Guerrero, 33, since his narrow 12 round unanimous decision loss to Danny Garcia last January in a failed attempt to win the vacant WBC welterweight title at the Staples Center in Carson, California. The fight will be televised on Premier Boxing Champions on Spike TV.

Guerrero lost the Danny Garciafight on the cards by the scores of 116-112, 116-112 and 116-112. It’s now been six months since Guerrero’s loss, but he’s taking a weak opponent for this fight. Guerrero gave Garcia some problems in that fight, but he didn’t have the power and didn’t put enough pressure on him to win. It was still a very close fight.

Guerrero has not looked good in the last three years of his career in losing to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013, Keith Thurman in March 2015, and then to Garcia earlier this year. Guerrero’s wins have been close ones over Aron Martinez last year in June, and Yoshihiro Kamegai by a 12 round decision two years ago in a war in June 2014. It was really brutal fight where Guerrero took a ton of needless punishment in electing to slug with Kamegai. Guerrero won the fight, but it was harder won than it was expected.

Guerrero can’t afford to start fighting a bunch of lower level guys like Peralta if he wants to take advantage of what’s left of his youth. Fighting scrubs makes sense if you’re a young fighter, but not when you’re about to turn 34 like Guerrero.

Guerrero should be able to beat Peralta without any problems, but you never know. Guerrero was supposed to have beaten Aaron Martinez easily and he ended up winning a controversial decision after getting knocked down in round four. Guerrero appeared to lose consciousness when he was knocked down. He was able to get back up from the knockdown and come on in the second half of the fight to get the win. It looked to many boxing fans that Martinez had done enough to win the fight.

Peralta isn’t a 1st tier fighter, and he was recently beaten by Cristian Nestor Romero (16-8-1, 8 KOs) last year in April 2015 in losing a 10 round split decision. Peralta also was beaten in 2011 by Claudio Alfredo Olmedo by a 5th round knockout. Peralta’s wins have come against little known opposition in Argentina.

Also on the Guerrero vs. Peralta card is middleweight Alfredo Angulo facing journeyman Freddy Hernandez in a 10 round fight. In addition to that fight, middleweight Terrell Gausha will be fighting Steve Martinez in a 10 round fight.
