By Dan Ambrose: Former two division world champion Marcos Maidana (35-5, 31 KOs) reportedly is interested in making a comeback to the sport after having been out of the ring for nearly two years now. According to Fighthype.com, the 32-year-old Maidana will be meeting with his adviser Al Haymon and possibly starting training camp next month in August.

Get this: Maidana wants still wants to fight at welterweight. What makes that so hard to believe is the huge amount of weight that Maidana has put on since his last fight in September of 2014 against Floyd Mayweather Jr. Maidana has been said to have ballooned up to 190s. In photos of Maidana, he’s looked very heavy and looked nothing like the muscular fighter that gave Mayweather so many problems.

If Maidana can get back down to 147, it’s going to take a tremendous effort on his part to trim off the weight without weakening himself to the point where he’s no longer a top level fighter.

It’s going to be tough enough for Maidana to try and come back after two years out of the sport. But when you factor in all the weight Maidana is going to need to take off for him to stay at 147, the odds are going to be stacked against him to be the fighter he once was.

“We’re told that Maidana recently flew in from Argentina and will soon be meeting with advisor Al Haymon to discuss his future plans,” said Fighthype.com. “Although Maidana has not officially made a final decision about returning, sources say members of his team have already started making plans for a training camp as early as August.”

Maidana made millions in his two fights against Mayweather. For him to come back to the sport, he would probably be doing it more for the love of the sport rather than in search of more money. The welterweight division is barren of stars right now. If Maidana wants to make big money, he would be better off moving to 154 and looking to get a fight against either Saul “Canelo” Alvarez or middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. Those are fights that would at least bring Maidana some good money.

Maidana won’t get the huge cash fighting the likes of Danny Garcia, Keith Thurman, Jessie Vargas or Kell Brook at 147. Those are not big enough names to get Maidana the big money he received for his two fights against Mayweather.

Maidana lost to Mayweather by a 12 round decision in his last fight in September 2014 by the scores of 116-111, 116-111 and 115-122. In Maidana’s first fight against Mayweather in May 2014, he lost by a 12 round by the scores of 116-112, 117-111 and 114-114. The fight appeared to be a lot closer than the scores the two judges that scored it for Mayweather.

It would seem that the best bet for Maidana at 147 would be for him to target WBC champion Danny Garcia. That would be an interesting fight, and it would be a match that his adviser Al Haymon could easily put together due to him managing Garcia as well.
