By Scott Gilfoid: Former heavyweight world title challenger Eric “Drummer Boy” Molina (25-3, 19 KOs) has issued a challenge to #11 WBO, #12 IBF David Price (20-3, 17 KOs) to face him in October in a fight that he wants to take place in the UK or Poland.

Molina, 34, says he doesn’t want the fight to take place in his home country of the U.S, as he would prefer to do the fight in Europe if the 33-year-old Price and his promoters at Sauerland Events accept the offer.

It would be a big risk for the 6’8” Price, because he looked of shaky in his last fight against Vaclav Pejsar last May in Liverpool, UK. Price was nailed a number of times with clean right hands to the jaw by the little known 3rd tier fighter Pejsar. But what was most of troubling of all was the way Price retreated to the ropes and covered up after getting tagged by a big right hand from Pejsar.

This was the same approach that Price used in his 2nd round knockout loss to Erkan Teper last year in July. The only difference is that Pejsar didn’t have the power to finish Price off. Price ended up winning the fight by a 2nd round knockout, but he was marked up around his jaw area from Pejsar’s shots.

“It’s an exciting fight, both of us can punch, and in my mind I’m always going to be the only one standing in the fight,” said Molina to skysports.com. “I definitely think I could beat him.”

I think Molina can beat Price as well. The 6’4” Molina has the kind of power and size to take Price out fairly quickly within one or two rounds. I’d be very surprised if Price’s German promoters let him within 3,000 miles of a puncher like Molina. It doesn’t matter that Molina is flawed as heck and just as vulnerable as Price is, I still don’t see Sauerland Events letting him fight the tough Mexican American because there’s too much risk.

I believe Molina would get to Price early before he’s had a chance to nail him with one of his own big shots.

Molina is currently ranked at #8 IF, #12 WBC in the heavyweight division’s rankings. He’s been working with WBC heavyweight champion Deontay “Bronze Bomber” Wilder to get him ready for his July 16 title defense against Chris Arreola at the Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama.

I think that gives Molina a huge advantage over Price with the sparring he’s been getting with a talent like Deontay. I mean, there would be plenty of time for Price to get his own top level sparring if he agreed to fight Molina in October. I just don’t know if it would help him any due to Molina being such a big puncher.

Molina is coming off an impressive 10th round knockout victory over former two division world champion Tomasz Adamek last April in Krakow, Poland. Molina knocked Adamek out in front of his own fans in that fight. It’s rare for a heavyweight to carry his power late in their fights, but that’s Molina did. He actually got stronger as the fight wore on. By the 10th round, he was blasting away at Adamek with huge right hands.
