By Eric Baldwin: In a fight that few boxing fans have any interest in seeing, WBA World middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs (31-1, 28 KOs) will be back inside the ring in two months from now in a needless rematch against 35-year-old former WBA junior middleweight champion Sergio “The Latin Snake” Mora (28-4-2, 8 KOs) on September 9 at the Santander Arena in Reading, Pennsylvania.

Jacobs has openly said that he wasn’t excited about the rematch against Mora, because he would prefer to take on a bigger name. Going back to face the same guy he already beat is a backwards move in the minds of Jacobs.

Both fighters have been out of the ring for a while. Jacobs last fought in December of last year in Stopping Peter Quillin in the 1st round.

Jacobs already beat Mora by a 2nd round knockout last August at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. However, Mora broke his right ankle in the 2nd round of the fight after slipping on the canvas. Jacobs was then given the win. Mora was knocked down one in the 1st and another time in the 2nd. Jacobs was down in round one when he got careless while looking for a fast knockout.

You can’t blame Jacobs for getting careless because it was so easy for him. Jacobs was hitting the slower, weaker Mora at will with big power shots and looked to be on his way to a quick 1st round knockout. Jacobs knocked Mora down with a right hand to the head. Moments later, Mora returned the favor in dropping Jacobs with a left hook to the head.

Jacobs was more hurt from his knockdown than Mora was. Jacobs was still able to get up and take the fight to Mora in unsteady legs. If Mora had the presence of mind to go after the hurt Jacobs, he might have been able to knock him out in the 1st round.

With all the different contenders available for Jacobs to fight, it’s disappointing that he’ll be facing Mora a second time. Yes, their fight last September was stopped under unusual circumstances with Mora suffering a broken ankle, but the fight had turned into a one-sided affair by the time that Mora suffered the injury. He went down from a right hand to the head and hurt his ankle while falling down.

Boxing fans want to see Jacobs step it up against better opposition than facing a guy that is no longer relevant like Mora. If this fight had taken place eight years ago when Mora was briefly the WBA 154lb champion, then it would make sense. But it’s been so long since Mora has been a major player in the sport. It’s a weird fight that is no longer interesting unless you were to take Jacobs back to 2008 in a time machine.

A rematch between Jacobs and Mora would make sense if Mora had gotten back inside the ring and fought at least one guy since getting beaten last year by Jacobs. But with Mora having just sat around since his injury, it makes it a pointless rematch from a fan perspective as well as for Jacobs.
