By Scott Gilfoid: Former heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (64-4, 53 KOs) feels he’s going to be doing the boxing fans as a whole a big favor when he beats IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (25-0, 18 KOs) next month and shuts his yap after they face each other on July 9 at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, UK. Fury recently made some controversial comments that upset many people, and Wladimir thinks he’s got a big mouth that he wants to close when they fight each other in their rematch.

Wladimir lost his heavyweight titles to Fury last November in getting beaten by a 12 round unanimous decision in Dusseldorf, Germany. Ever since capturing the belts, Fury has received a great deal of publicity in the boxing world, and he’s used the attention to sound off on a number of things that go beyond the sport of boxing.

“The man is probably mentally sick. It’s not just British fans I’ll be doing a favor when I beat him, it’ll be for Klitschko fans and boxing fans in general,” said Wladimir to The Mirror. “We cannot have a champion like that. Either he needs to be shut up or shut down in the ring, or just suspended, because you cannot create more hate.”

So there it is. Wladimir thinks Fury is possibly off his rocker, and he wants to shut his trap when he gets him inside the ring next month. I’m not sure if Wladimir beating Fury will necessarily cause him to shut up, but I do think it might stop him from crowing for a while. I mean, Fury has been like a big rooster crowing about his win over Wladimir from last November. The thing is, it was an awful performance from Fury. He was running around the ring, slapping at the air, using constant feints, and hitting almost nothing.

Personally, I think it was the worst performance I’ve ever seen from a challenger in capturing a world title. Fury won because Wladimir was even worse than him. Wladimir fought like an old man that no longer had his hand-eye coordination, and could no longer pull the trigger on his punches. I think there was also a lot of fear mixed in there for Wladimir that kept him from throwing punches. He looked plain scared to throw any shots. When he did throw punches, he did it tentatively like he wasn’t mentally fully committed to throw it. If you have a fighter that isn’t certain about whether he should throw a punch or not, they’re going to throw their shots without a lot of speed and force on them. This makes it easier for their opponents to get out of the shots, which is what we saw happen all night long last November. Wladimir throwing few punches, but when he would, he threw them with no speed or power on them.

“It puts the world of boxing in the wrong spot,” said Wladimir about Fury. “He represents not just himself, but the sanctioning bodies, a lot of boxing fans in general. It’s not just about him and he needs to understand, but he obviously doesn’t. The man is an imbecile. Seriously. You cannot put it all together as a representation of the sport of boxing. He’s an imbecile champion.”
Well, if Wladimir gives Fury a royal thrashing, he might send him into retirement. Fury has been blabbering about him possibly retiring if he loses to Wladimir.

If Wladimir really wants to shut Fury up, then I think the best way for him to do that would be to knock him out fast on July 9, and then stand back and see where he goes from there. I think a knockout loss for Fury would be a hard pill for him to swallow mentally, and it might lead to him hanging up the gloves and disappearing. People handle shameful/humiliating events in different ways. Some people want to hide after they suffer an embarrassing moment in their lives while others are willing to come to terms with the event and aren’t bothered as much.

With Fury bringing up the subject of retirement as a possibility if he loses to Wladimir, my guess is Fury is the type who will disappear from the sport instead of dealing with the loss the way most fighters do by continuing his career.
