By Allan Fox: #2 WBA, #2 WBC middleweight contender Chris Eubank Jr. (23-1, 18 KOs) will be getting a huge payday in his proposed fight against IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) if the fight can get made. Eubank Jr. could make a little over $4 million for the fight, according to the Dailymail. The contracts for the fight are expected to be signed by the end of this week. Eubank Jr’s promoter Eddie Hearn wants the Golovkin-Eubank Jr. fight to take place at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

Golovkin is expected to go along with whatever venue that is suggested by Hearn. This is going to be Eubank Jr’s chance to show that he’s willing to take on the best by facing Golovkin. If Eubank Jr. fails to sign the contract, he’ll be widely criticized by boxing fans and the media.

“It is very close to being made. We had a positive meeting with Sky and the major details are nearly all agreed. We still have stuff to discuss but I expect both sides to sign by the end of this weekend,” said Hearn to the Dailymail.

This is a very risky fight for Eubank Jr., because he doesn’t have the experience needed to gauge where he has a logical chance of winning against an accomplished fighter like Triple G. Eubank Jr. has one good opponent on his resume in Billy Joe Saunders, and he lost to him by a 12 round decision two years ago in 2014. Saunders has been interested ever since in facing Eubank Jr., but the interest hasn’t been reciprocal.

Eubank Jr. fought to become the No.1 contender for WBA champion Daniel Jacobs last year. After beating Gary O’Sullivan to give himself that spot, Eubank Jr. decided to go after British middleweight champion Nick Blackwell last March. Eubank Jr. won the fight by a 10th round knockout, and he then successfully defended the belt last Saturday night in stopping Tom Doran in the 4th round.

“They have taunted each other on social media and both say they want it – now the fighters need to prove it by signing,” said Hearn. “It’s funny, I am still waiting for a call from the Eubanks to say this was all for a bit of hype. But it’s not – they genuinely want Chris Eubank to fight the most feared boxer on the planet in Gennady Golovkin. They are deadly serious about the fight.”

With the kind of money that Eubank Jr. can make from this fight, he has no reasons not to sign. Even if Eubank Jr. loses to GGG, he’ll likely remain in demand by the top guys like Daniel Jacobs, David Lemieux and possibly even Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. The top fighters in the 160lb division will all way a crack and Eubank Jr. after this fight, and he’s sure to keep making good money. What Eubank Jr. needs to be careful of is becoming an opponent for the best fighters to test themselves again, because his career could quickly fizzle out. it would be a shame to see Eubank Jr. return to fighting domestic level opposition if he loses to Golovkin.
