By Jeff Aranow: Boxer Chris Van Heerden is giving UFC champion Conor McGregor a puncher’s chance against Floyd Mayweather Jr. if the two of them face each other this year on September 17. It’s a fight that Mayweather wants, and he believes it can bring in as many PPV buys as his fight against Manny Pacquiao last year.

Van Heerden had the opportunity to spar the 27-year-old McGregor recently. They used big 16oz gloves, and Van Heerden was able to get a pretty good idea of how well McGregor will do against Mayweather.

Van Heerden believes Mayweather would be able to KO McGregor at any time he chooses. However, he still believes that Van Heerden would have a chance if he could stun Mayweather with a big shot.

Portions of the sparring between McGregor and Van Heerden is on YouTube. McGregor did not look good. Van Heerden clearly out-boxed Mcgregor during the sparring session, as you would expect from a professional fighter facing an inexperienced novice who had never fought before. You’ve give McGregor some credit for not being totally clowned by Van Heerden. However, it looked as if Van Heerden could have massacred McGregor if he had wanted to. Van Heerden was able to do whatever he wanted to during the sparring session.

“I was not at any point shocked. Maybe I did expect a little more power,” said Van Heerden to Fighthype.com about McGregor. “Conor can throw and he has a puncher’s chance. He might just land on the spot once and it could mean trouble. But Floyd is TBE, 49-0 for a reason.”

Mayweather vs. McGregor could make a lot of money on PPV, because there many MMA fans that would like to see how McGregor would do against Mayweather or any top fighter. However, the fight would likely anger many fans if it fails to produce a competitive fight.

If Mayweather dominates McGregor while fighting at half speed like he did in his last fight against Andre Berto, it’s going to leave people feeling ripped off for having paid to see the mismatch. If the price of the PPV is jacked up to $100 like it was for the Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao fight last year, it’s likely to really anger fans.

“He will give a few boxers out there a really good go,” said Van Heerden about McGregor. “I Feel Floyd can pick at any time when he wants to end it. Will it sell? Yes, it will bring in huge money I think. Should it really happen? No. It’s a boxer with 49-0 experience against a 0-0 experience guy as a pro boxer. There’s guys that box their whole life hoping to get a shot against Mayweather that really deserves it more.”

At this point it’s unknown if the Mayweather-McGregor fight will ultimately take place or not. Two things that could keep the fight from happening is the revenue split and McGregor being under contract with UFC. Mayweather and McGregor both want $100 million for the fight, and there probably won’t be enough money for both guys to get that kind of guaranteed purse. Secondly, McGregor will likely need permission from the UFC to face Mayweather. Will they let McGregor take the fight? I don’t know why they would because his value might drop if he gets beaten badly by Mayweather.
