Mayweather says beating Golovkin would be easy

floyd883By Allan Fox: Floyd Mayweather Jr. spoke up over the weekend to tell an assembled mass of people that he would easily beat IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin if he could make middleweight.

Mayweather feels he couldn’t make that weight, but if he could, he would beat him. Golovkin weighs the same amount as Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, a fighter Mayweather beat in 2013. Golovkin said he would move down to 154 to fight Mayweather in a weight class where he held the WBA and WBC titles until retiring last September.

Mayweather says they [the fans?] don’t want Golovkin to move up to light heavyweight Andre Ward.

“When I look at the fight game, we have to really just look at…I moved up 5 weight classes; they want me to jump up two more weight classes and fight Triple G, but they don’t want Triple G to fight Andre Ward. Triple G would never call Andre Ward’s name out…if I could go up, I would go up and beat him…it’s easy,” said Mayweather to Fighthype.

I think Golovkin would be interested in fighting Ward right now if he’d already cleaned out the middleweight division like he wants to. Golovkin is focused on trying to get a fight against WBC belt holder Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. That’s a fight that would be a huge mega-fight, and earn Golovkin a tremendous payday.

This isn’t a knock on Ward, but a fight against him wouldn’t be nearly as big as a fight against Canelo. Ward vs. Golovkin might be a PPV fight, but it likely wouldn’t bring in a ton of PPV buys due to neither of these guys being PPV attractions yet. If Golovkin moves up to light heavyweight for a one-fight situation, he could find himself stuck at that weight and not able to move back down to resume fighting at 160.

If Mayweather were to fight Golovkin, it would be great because the fans could see how Mayweather easily beats him. I don’t think it would be easy for Mayweather even if Golovkin moved down to 154 to give him an advantage. Golovkin hits too hard, and Mayweather wouldn’t be able to keep him off of him.

I have a feeling that we’re never going to see Golovkin fight Ward because it’s taking him too long to unify all the titles at 160. Golovkin is older than Ward at 34, and it won’t be good for him if it takes him a long time to unify the titles. Golovkin isn’t going to take a smaller money fight like the one against Ward when he’s got the chance to get a tremendous payday against Canelo.

I think Mayweather would be knocked out by Golovkin if he could move up to 154 from 147. Since we already know Mayweather can fight at 154 from his win over Canelo in 2013, my only conclusion I can make is that Mayweather is ducking the Golovkin fight for fear of being knocked out by him. I also think Mayweather is dropping Golovkin’s name to stay relevant in the sport because by him saying his name, he gets attention from fans without actually having to fight him.
