By Patrick McHugh: WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (23-2-2, 13 KOs) wants IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin to sit down with him and negotiate a fight. Lara, 33, is coming off of a close 12 round unanimous decision win over #15 WBA Vanes Martirosyan (36-3-1, 21 KOs) last Saturday night on Showtime Championship Boxing at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Lara thinks Golovkin saw the fight between him and Martirosyan and may be interested in fighting him now. Golovkin [or whoever runs his official Twitter page and does the posting there] didn’t make any remarks about the Lara-Martirosyan fight.

That’s probably a good indication that there isn’t a whole lot of interest from Golovkin’s side for a fight against Lara, because the he or whoever does the posting there usually comments on important fights. There is nothing but silence about Lara’s win over Martirosyan.

“[Gennady Golovkin] must have seen my fight, and the times I’ve fought and called him out. Let’s sit down negotiate. Let’s make the fight and give the fans a good show,” Lara said to boxeo mundial. “The fighters I want is Canelo and Golovkin. I’m ready for either one. I see nobody like me he’s fought. I’d beat him with a lot of intelligence,” said Lara.

Lara would do well to keep knocking on the Golovkin fight if he really wants that match-up. Lara might need to take to the media to start a heavy campaign to try and draw Golovkin and his promoters at K2 out to get them to come to the negotiating table. Golovkin is trying to get a fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez for September.

The negotiations between them just took a turn for the worse with Canelo vacating his WBC middleweight title in a move that he says was to escape the pressure that was being put on him by the World Boxing Council with them setting a deadline of May 24 for the Canelo-Golovkin negotiations to be completed.

Canelo says he gave up the WBC title so that he’d have more time to negotiate the fight with Golovkin. If the fight doesn’t happen though, then it could be a chance for Lara to get Golovkin. He doesn’t have an opponent for his next fight. If Golovkin doesn’t get the fight against Canelo, then Lara might be the best option for him as far as facing an opponent that is known with some casual boxing fans in the United States.

The options are not good for Golovkin if he doesn’t get the Canelo fight. He would be looking at fighters like Tureano Johnson, Jorge Sebastian Heiland, Alfonso Blanco, Hassan N’Dam and possibly Billy Joe Saunders. The Saunders fight would be a good one because he holds the WBO middleweight title, and that’s the last middleweight belt not in Golovkin’s possession.

However, that fight might be of Golovkin’s price range because Saunders says he wants to be paid well if he agrees to fight Golovkin. The other names that were mentioned above are less known to the casual boxing fans than Lara in the U.S. It might be better for Golovkin to agree to a fight against Lara if the fight can be made.
