Khan says Kell Brook has talked himself out of a fight

Image: Khan says Kell Brook has talked himself out of a fightBy Scott Gilfoid: Well, I figured IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook’s yapping about Amir Khan would lead to an empty dirt road and I was right. I hate to say it. Khan said today that Brook isn’t in his plans for the future, and that he’s tired of his lip. Brook’s mouthing off has led to Khan putting the 30-year-old champion Brook on the ignore list. As such, instead of Brook getting that big stadium fight against Khan, he’ll have to try and get someone like WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas.

I wish Brook a lot of luck trying to fill a stadium in a fight against him. Vargas. The American fighter has already said he won’t be fighting Brook in the UK. He says the only way he’ll fight Brook is if he comes to the U.S to take the fight.

Khan was knocked out in the 6th round last Saturday night by WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, who Khan estimates was weighing an incredible 180lbs on the night. That’s a lot of weight for someone who weighed in at 155lbs and who has been telling the media that he’s still a junior middleweight.

“Not at all. I’m not even thinking about him, to be honest with you,” said Khan to skysports.com about a fight against Brook. “We’ve got other plans. We’re going to go to the drawing board with Virgil Hunter, Al Haymon and my team. I spoke to them and he’s not one of the names we’re looking at so it’s not an option. I would love to do that [silence Brook] but because he talks so much, I just don’t want to give him that opportunity and that chance.”

So there it is. Khan won’t be giving Brook a fight because he doesn’t want to give him a shot after the way he’s been flapping his gums about him. Brook called Khan out last Saturday night just moments after he’d been knocked out by Canelo in the 6th round. Needless to say, it was an incredibly thing to do because what fighter calls out another fighter after he’s been knocked out? I mean, that was kind of done in the reverse of how it should have been, right?

Why would Brook be interested in fighting Khan with him coming off of a vicious knockout that saw him out cold on the canvas.

I could understand Brook wanting to fight Khan if he’d beaten Canelo black and blue and taken his WBC title from him in front of the packed house at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. That’s not what happened though. Khan got blasted to smithereens and his stock has totally dropped to rock bottom with that loss.

I want to know why isn’t Brook standing on his hind legs and calling out unbeaten talent Errol Spence Jr. (20-0, 17 KOs) right now, because this guy is ranked #2 by the IBF and he’s seen as the next Floyd Mayweather Jr. by a lot of boxing fans. This is the closest thing that Brook may ever get to fighting a superstar, because Spence appears to be heading towards becoming the next Mayweather.

At least if Brook fights Spence now, he can tell boxing fans that he fought the guy and have his name on his resume, even though I think Brook will get knocked out fairly quickly by Spence. Just having Spence’s name attached to his resume is worth 10 times some of Brook’s recent opponents in my view.

“I’m fighting the best people in the world, the biggest names in boxing. My name is up in lights in Vegas. Look at my last few opponents and look at his last few opponents – I think it says it there,” said Khan about Brook.
