By Scott Gilfoid: Chris Eubank Jr. (22-1, 17 KOs) believes he’ll beat IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) when they face each other in the near future. Unlike other fighters, Eubank Jr. is not intimidated by Triple G. He sees him as a slow fighter with good punching power, but with poor defensive skills that he can take advantage of when he gets him inside the ring.

Eubank Jr., 26, has already formulated how he’ll beat the 34-year-old Kazakhstan fighter by throwing more punches than him. For every one of Golovkin’s punches, Eubank Jr. says he’ll come back with three to five punches of his own.

Eubank Jr. is confident that he’ll be able to take Golovkin’s big shots and answer back with combinations to get the better of him.

At this point, Eubank Jr. could get a fight against Golovkin at the very end of 2016, but more likely in 2017. Golovkin is looking to face either Saul “Canelo” Alvarez or Billy Joe Saunders. After that, Golovkin must face WBA World middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs if the American doesn’t vacate the title to avoid him. Golovkin has no choice in the matter because World Boxing Association president Gilberto Mendoza is already saying that Golovkin has only one more fight he can take before he must face Jacobs. This means we won’t see Golovkin face Eubank Jr. until 2017 at the earliest.

“He [GGG] is seen as the number one guy in my weight division, he’s seen as this unbeatable guy who everyone is scared of and I don’t see that,” Eubank Jr said to the voice-online. “I watch his fights and I see slowness, I see a weak defence. I see great punching power but what happens when a guy takes the punch and says, ‘ok, now what?’ Which is what I will do, if I get hit. Speed kills and for every one punch he throws I am going to be throwing three, four or five punches. So the only way he beats me is if he knocks me out and you are going to have to hit me with a sledgehammer to move me, so that’s where I get my confidence from against a man like that.”

I hate to say it but it’s doubtful that Eubank Jr. will last more than six rounds against Golovkin. Eubank Jr’s feet are slow, and he’s there to be hit. Eubank Jr’s defensive skills are not top rated. As far as his offensive weapons go, Eubank Jr. can only throw uppercuts.

The rest of his punches are nothing special. He can only throw uppercuts with power. the thing is he’s too one dimensional for his own good, and he’s not going to be able to beat a talent like Golovkin, or even someone along the lines of Jacobs, with his uppercuts.

Eubank Jr. is a one-trick pony without the weaponry needed to beat the top guys in the division. I do think Eubank Jr. has improved since his loss to Billy Joe Saunders in 2014, but he hasn’t improved enough to deal with the likes of Golovkin, Jacobs, and probably not even Peter Quillin, who I’m never been impressed with as a fighter.

It’s a good career move for Eubank Jr. to fight Golovkin as soon as possible because it’ll give him a huge push in terms of making him a known fighter. Facing a guy like Golovkin or Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is like adding years of fights under one’s belt because the attention that you can get from facing those guys. It’s a win-win for Eubank Jr. even if he gets plastered all over the canvas against him. The fight fans from around the world will know who he is after that fight.
