Mayweather responds to Kellerman saying Pacquiao is best of this era

1-LR_FIGHT NIGHT-FLOYD MAYWEATHER-04012016-8767By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr. didn’t take it too well in hearing that HBO’s Max Kellerman said that he feels that Manny Pacquiao is the best fighter of this era. Pacquiao lost to Mayweather last May by a 12 round decision.

For Kellerman to still believe that Pacquiao is the best fighter of this era despite the loss to Mayweather and losses to Tim Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez doesn’t sit right with Mayweather. With what he feels he’s accomplished in the sport over the course of his career, Mayweather believes that he stands alone at the top as the greatest fighter of all time.

“A lot of guys that commentate about boxing never boxed before in their life. They can tell you about how many VHS tapes they watched,” Mayweather said to Fighthype in reference to HBO’s Max Kellerman saying Pacquiao is the best fighter of this years. “They can tell you about how many YouTube videos they watched. When it’s all said and done and you look at all the fighters that competed from the beginning of time to now, there’s only one man that stands alone and you looking at him,” said Mayweather.

It’s hard to disagree with Mayweather’s opinion about how some guys commentate about the sport that they have never competed in. Having Pacquiao at the top of the heap as the No.1 fighter in this era makes little sense because he’s been beaten too many times for him to be seen as better than Mayweather. Further, Pacquiao’s first three fights with Juan Manuel Marquez were all controversial with Pacquiao winning twice and getting a draw in fights that many boxing fans saw Marquez winning. You can argue that Pacquiao has suffered six defeats in the last 12 years. That’s hard to call someone with that many defeats the best of our era. Kellerman might be focusing on Pacquiao’s earlier fights too much when saying he sees Pacquiao as the best, because if he looked at Pacquiao’s other questionable fights and his losses to Mayweather and Marquez, you can’t call him the best.

I personally think Pacquiao was the best from the late 2007 to 2009 era when Mayweather wasn’t around. During that time frame that Mayweather was inactive, Pacquiao was the best fighter, but you can hardly call that an era. That’s just less than two year time frame where Pacquiao was dominant. If you want to be brutally honest, Juan Manuel Marquez was the best fighter from 2007 to 2009, and not Pacquiao. Marquez arguably beat Pacquiao in their fights in 2004 and 2008. This means that Marquez was the best fighter during Mayweather’s absence from the ring, not Pacquiao. It’s funny how Marquez doesn’t any credit from Kellerman for being the best when he was only beaten by Mayweather in 2009. Marquez’s loss to Pacquiao in 2011 was controversial, and his loss to Tim Bradley was very close and could have gone either way. Bradley ran from Marquez the entire fight.

Pacquiao is a good fighter, but I see him as a number three guy rather than the number one fighter during this era. Unfortunately, when you’re number two or number three, you’re nothing.
