Malignaggi wants rematch with Adrien Broner

broner222By Jeff Aranow: 35-year-old former two division world champion Paulie Malignaggi (35-7, 7 KOs) is hoping to get a rematch with Adrien “The Problem” Broner (32-2, 24 KOs) after three years following his controversial 12 round split decision loss to Broner in 2013.

Malignaggi has lost two out of his last five fights and looks to be all but finished with his pro career. However, he still feels that the 26-year-old Broner should have to go through him if he wants a big money fight against Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. in the near future.

Broner probably won’t get a fight against Mayweather no matter which fighter he beats in the near future. Mayweather is retired from the sport now, and he sees nothing in Broner’s game but flaws that need work.

Mayweather is flat out not interested in fighting Broner, and you can’t blame him because there are bigger fights out there for him than Broner if he were to choose to return to the sport.

“Sure do, before taking on the king of the welters he should at least prove he can get past me in a definitive way, I deserve my rematch,” said Malignaggi to RingTV.com.

Broner beat Malignaggi by the scores of 115-113, 117-111 for Broner, and 115-113 for Malignaggi. A lot of boxing fans disagreed with the scoring of the Broner vs. Malignaggi fight because Malignaggi outworked Broner and appeared to get the better of him. The two judges that scored the fight for Broner were obviously more impressed with his harder landing punches than the higher work rate from Malignaggi.

Malignaggi has been knocked out twice since his questionable loss to Broner in stoppage defeats to Shawn Porter and Danny Garcia. However, Malignaggi has won his last two fights against little known fighters Laszlo Fazekas and Atonio Moscatiello.

“He looked fine to me, he did what he had to do, Theophane was game but it was a different level. Enough now… I’ve waited long enough for a rematch!” said Malignaggi in discussing Broner’s 9th round knockout win over Ashley “Treasure” Theophane (39-7-1, 11 KOs) last Friday night in their fight on Premier Boxing Champions on Spike TV from the DC Armory in Washington, DC.

Broner has to take care of some legal problems in Cincinnati before he can fight again. Who knows how long Broner will be out of the ring before he can continue fighting. It might take a while before he’s ready to fight again.

Before Broner’s fights against Theophane, John Molina and Carlos Molina, I wouldn’t have thought that Broner would ever waste his time fighting Malignaggi again, but I think Broner would definitely take the fight with him now.

I see Broner as someone who is just looking to get easy paydays at this point in his career, and not too concerned with fighting quality guys. The Mayweather fight is an exception though because Broner would get such a huge payday if he were to get that fight, and it wouldn’t really matter how badly he lost and got clowned by Mayweather. The money would make it well worth it.
