The 25-year-old Lara knocked Montiel down four times in the 1st round. The fight was stopped after Lara knocked Montiel down with a hard right hook that put him down face down on the canvas. The official time of the stoppage was 1:27 of the round.

The much bigger Lara wasted no time in rushing across the ring and nailing the smaller and older Montiel with a big right hand to put him on the canvas for the first knockdown of the fight. Montiel looked in shock after he got back to his feet. When the action resumed, Lara flurried on Montiel to put him down for a second time. Montiel looked confused upon getting up like he wanted the action to be slower.

When the action resumed, Lara dropped Montiel again with a brief salvo of head shots. Lara continued to hit Montiel even after he was on the canvas. The referee Ray Corona gave Lara a warning about hitting Montiel while he was down, but he still counted the knockdown. In the final knockdown, Montiel tried to move a little to avoid Lara, but it was no use. Lara cornered Montiel and knocked him down with a right hook to the head that put Montiel down face first on the canvas.

In hindsight, Montiel has no business fighting in the featherweight division. He should have never moved up to this weight class because he’s clearly too small. Montiel started his career out at flyweight and he’s not big enough to fight guys like Lara, who looked like a light welterweight tonight. The size difference between these two guys ensured that Montiel had no chance of winning.
