By Babatis Banda: It is clear that boxing is in trouble with torch bearers, Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao stepping aside. It seems these two names may not leave the lips of those that venerate the spot anytime soon.
The most awaited and the richest bout in the sport came and passed by, but there was little satisfaction in the bout. There are a number of reasons why there was very little satisfaction with what happened on that night.
I have taken time to watch Floyd Mayweather Junior tapes from the early fights to the time he decided to hang the leathers. The younger Floyd was everything boxing could be. Mayweather was fast, agile, good foot work, good power, hard to hit and aggressive. He was plainly the best a man could get on the sport but yet, he would get the jeers and he always was on the wrong side with the crowd in all his bouts. The sweet thing about Mayweather was that, always and always, the crowds would be quieter as the bouts progressed needless to say, the awe with which he tactically decimated his opponents.
It is thus clear that Floyd has never been the people’s champion. In fact Floyd reflected on this very well before the Atturo Gatti fight. He said that Atturo was the people’s champion, but he (Mayweather) was the world champion. The reason why there was a good level of dissatisfaction over the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight was definitely because Pacquiao lost the fight.
No doubt Pacquiao is the people’s champion and it ends with that. Pacquiao and Mayweather can fight ten times, I can bet my small finger….Floyd beats Pacquiao ten out of ten times. Many people will not love this but Floyd beat Pacquiao without breaking sweat. He made it so easy it was unbelievable. It was as simple as it could ever be. Brains versus sheer bruit, and brains always win and I have always emphasized this.
It must be the shoulder wasn’t it? Allow me to laugh a little. The logic now is that since Pacquiao’s shoulder was healed so fast by the sea water, the fight would be on an even field this time around. Shoulder or no shoulder many people will still be dissatisfied because Floyd is actually capable of completely embarrassing Pacquiao. Mark my words again, if there will be a re-match, Floyd outshines Pacquiao again. Peace be with you all.
