Sanchez comments on Mayweather telling Golovkin to fight Ward

golovkin#236By Allan Fox: Trainer Abel Sanchez thinks it’s completely ridiculous for Floyd Mayweather Jr. to want Gennady Golovkin to move up to light heavyweight to fight Andre Ward before he’ll agree to fight him. Sanchez thinks that it would be too hard on Golovkin to move up in weight to fight Ward, and then have to come all the way down to 154 immediately after to face Mayweather.

Sanchez points out that Golovkin was willing to move up to 168 in the past for a fight against Carl Froch and move down to 154 to fight Mayweather. However, a fight against Froch would have been a big money fight for Golovkin with him making potentially $10 million at the minimum and possibly as much as $15 million.

Froch is capable of selling out the 80,000 seat Wembley Stadium in London, England. Froch is a pay-per-view attraction. Ward is not a PPV star, and he’s arguably not capable of selling out an 80,000 seat stadium at this point in his career.

“That’s how ridiculous he is,” Sanchez said to Fighthype.com about Mayweather wanting Golovkin to move up to super middleweight or light heavyweight to fight Andre Ward before he’ll agree to fight him at 154. “He has to move up to move down. That’s stupid to me. Why would he [Golovkin] come up to 168 and then come down to 154? You saw what he [Golovkin] weighed the other day, which was 164. I put him on the scale at the doctor’s office. So he’s not a guy that’s a super middleweight. When he captured all the middleweight titles, then we can talk about moving up to 168. But we’re talking about not fighting for 10 cents. You’re talking about going and fighting in front of 80,000 people [against Froch]. It’s a business. He’s going to go to England and make $10-15 million dollars. Of course, we’re going to go to England and then struggle to get back to 154 [to fight Mayweather]. For a lot of guys, when they move up, it’s difficult for them to move back down. So Floyd would have a better chance if he didn’t move down because he’s going to kill himself to get back down to 154. How many people are here [at the Oracle Arena]. This guy [Golovkin] is going to sell out the forum again. Why would we take a step backwards [to fight Ward],” said Sanchez.

I don’t think Mayweather would give Golovkin a fight even if he did jump through the hoop that he’s setting up for him by him facing Ward and beating him first. If Golovkin did move up to 168 or 172 and beat Ward, Mayweather would likely not agree to fight Golovkin.

A win over Ward could very well scare Mayweather off, or get him to setup another condition that Golovkin would have to meet before Mayweather would agree to fight him. In other words, I don’t think Mayweather would ever agree to fight Golovkin no matter what he does. He could move to light heavyweight and beat the king Sergey Kovalev, and I still think it wouldn’t result with Golovkin getting the Mayweather fight.
