Mayweather comments about Broner throwing money at Walmart

floyd111By Jeff Aranow: Recently, WBA light welterweight champion Adrien “The Problem” Broner (31-2, 23 KOs) was videoed throwing money on the floor at Walmart after going to the cash register and receiving change.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. wasn’t in favor of Broner’s behavior and he doesn’t understand it. In the next video segment, Broner threw money out of a moving car, and then stopped the car so that he could watch people picking up his money. It was strange to watch.

“He [Broner] was in Walmart and what was so crazy about the video when I looked at it, it kind of hurt my feelings,” said Mayweather to Fighthype.com. “The person gave him his change back, I guess he had bought something and he threw the money or the change up in the air like, ‘Why are you giving me change back? You don’t know who I am?’ Actually, a lot of people in the store didn’t know who he was.

Mayweather thinks Broner is ultimately hurting himself with this kind of behavior. He’s probably right. Broner didn’t win any fans at Walmart; although I doubt that the customers knew who he was. What probably hurt Broner more was when he walked out of his press conference with his April 1 opponent Ashley Theophane (39-6-1, 11 KOs) instead of sticking around for photos and interviews for their fight at the DC Armory in Washington, DC. The Broner-Theophane fight will be televised on Premier Boxing Champions on Spike.

The money throwing stuff seems to be Broner emulating Mayweather with the way he’s thrown money at times in his career. However, what looks out of place is where Broner chooses to throw money. Also, Broner isn’t at the same superstar level that Mayweather is. Broner hasn’t made the huge money that Mayweather has made during his career.

If Broner were making $20 million to $40 million per fight, then it wouldn’t look nearly as contrived for him to be throwing money around. But it just looks like he’s trying to be like Mayweather. Broner should be trying to be his own person and not follow in Mayweather’s footsteps like a knock off version of him.

“When you got a chance to take things to the next level when you in Washington D.C. where there’s so many media outlets, you supposed to take full advantage of that,” Mayweather said about Broner’s recent press conference in Washington, DC that he walked out of.

The Theophane fight is supposed to be a mismatch for Broner, but you just never know. Broner has a lot of fights where he fails to impress even when matched against someone that he can clearly beat. We saw Broner not look great in his fights against Carlos Molina and Emmanuel Taylor. We also saw Broner lose to Shawn Porter last year by a 12 round decision. Losing wasn’t the bad thing. It was the way that Broner lost that fight that was really disappointing. He did a lot of holding, running and fouling. It was hard to watch the fight.
