matthysse567676By Jim Dower: Golden Boy Promotions are working tirelessly to finalize the negotiations for the welterweight clash between Lucas Matthysse and Mauricio Herrera for the undercard of the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Amir Khan card on HBO pay-per-view from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Golden Boy expects the Matthysse-Herrera fight negotiations to be wrapped up by next week possibly. It’s a great fight matching two of the best fighters that recently moved up from the light welterweight division to take this fight.

Matthysse vs. Herrera will definitely help create some interest in the Canelo-Khan undercard, and it should be a great fight. Both guys have dealt with some disappointing defeats in recent years. Herrera was beaten by Danny Garcia and Jose Benavidez in fights that many fans felt he should have won. Matthysse has suffered recent losses to Danny Garcia and Viktor Postol, two of the better fighters in the sport.

“It’s still in the works,” Golden Boy Promotions vice president Eric Gomez said to ringtv.com. “It’s about a week away from getting done. There are still loose ends — details that are important that could break the fight. They’re both interested but once you go down and start talking about money and weight and this and that, you can lose the fight.”

Matthysse and Herrera are at the point in their careers where they cannot take too many more defeats if they want to be able to win a championship and get a big payday. Matthysse suffered an eye injury in his 10th round knockout loss to Postol last year in October 2015. Herrera is coming off of a 5th round technical decision win over Hank Lundy in his last fight.

Besides the Matthysse-Herrera fight, interim WBA heavyweight champion Luis Ortiz is a possibility for the Canelo-Khan undercard if he wins his fight on Saturday night against 44-year-old Tony Thompson.

Canelo vs. Khan tickets on sale

The tickets for the Amir Khan vs. Saul Canelo Alvarez fight went on sale earlier today on Wednesday for their fight on May 7 on HBO PPV from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
This is a going to be a tremendous fight for as long as it lasts. Khan brings a lot of speed into the fight, and Canelo brings power and size. If Canelo wins, it sets up a big mega-fight against Gennady Golovkin. If Khan is victorious, then he’ll have plenty of options available to him.

“I took this fight because I truly believe I can win this fight come May 7th,” Khan said tonight in the Canelo-Khan press conference in Los Angeles, California. “You guys are going to be in for a shock. You guys are going to see more British fans than Mexican fans. The middleweight title is coming back home with me to Great Britain,” Khan said.

The large pro-Canelo crowd booed Khan after some of those comments, but Khan took it in stride and kept smiling throughout his time at the podium. Khan realizes that he’s the underdog in this fight but he plans on beating Canelo, shocking his many boxing fans, and then taking his title from him.

There could then be a rematch between them because Canelo was smart enough to include a rematch clause in the contract with Khan. He doesn’t want Khan to take his title and then get away. I think Canelo is more concerned with just having the opportunity to fight Khan in an immediate rematch to avenge his loss than he is about trying to get the WBC title back. It would be a bad thing for Canelo’s career if he were to lose to Khan and not have a chance to avenge the loss. Some fighters move on after they defeat their opponents and don’t bother ever giving them rematches. Danny Garcia is an example of that type of fighter that moves on after beating his opponents.
