By Allan Fox: A fight between unbeaten IBF junior middleweight champion Jermall Charlo (23-0, 18 KOs) and former WBA 154lb champion Austin Trout (30-2, 17 KOs) is possible for next month’s April 30th fight card headlined by Victor Ortiz vs. Andre Berto on Premier Boxing Champions on Fox at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

According to Dan Rafael, Trout, #3 WBA, #3 WBO, #6 WBC, #9 IBF, is the possible opponent for the hard hitting 25-year-old Charlo. However, the 30-year-old Trout might opt to fight WBO junior middleweight champion Liam Smith instead.

Trout has the possible option of fighting Liam Smith, and that’s arguably a much easier fight than facing a big puncher like Jermall. He’s the brother of unbeaten 154lb contender Jermell Charlo, and he’s considered to be far better puncher than Jermell. Trout doesn’t have big power, and he might over-matched against a guy like Jermall. Trout will likely head in the path of least resistance and take the Smith fight if he can get it. Jermall is fighting at too high of a level right now for Trout to take him on. If the southpaw Trout was a better puncher, then it would make all the sense in the world for him to face Jermall, but he’s not. Trout also seems to have a chin problem, as he was knocked down by Canelo, Lara and Daniel Dawson. If those guys were able to put Trout down, then Jermall would likely put him down and keep him there.

Trout’s once promising career has come off the rails since losing back to back fights to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Erislandy Lara in 2013. Trout has since won his last four fights against Daniel Dawson, Luis Grajeda. Luis Galarza and Joey Hernandez.

The previous co-feature for the Ortiz-Berto fight card was supposed to be a heavyweight clash between former two-time heavyweight title challenger Chris Areola and 2012 U.S Olympian Dominic Breazeale. However, Arreola suffered a foot injury outside of the ring and couldn’t take the fight. It’s perhaps a good thing for Arreola because he has not looked good of late in fights against Travis Kauffman.

Fred Kassi and Curtis Harper. Arreola’s beat Kauffman by a narrow 12 round majority decision last December. However, the outcome of the fight was changed to a no decision after Arreola tested positive in a post-fight drug test. Before that fight, Arreola had a very questionable 10 round draw against Fred Kassi last July in a fight that many boxing fans felt that Arreola deserved to lose. Arreola wasn’t much better in his fight against Harper in March of last year. Arreola was given an 8 round decision, but the fight looked more like a draw in the minds of some fans.

Breazeale looked really poor in beating Kassi by a 10 round decision in September of 2015. It appeared that Kassi had beaten the highly hyped Breazeale, but the judges gave it to Breazeale. In Breazeale’s last fight against Amir Mansour, he was dropped in the 3rd. However, Mansour suffered an injury and didn’t come out after the 5th round.
