By Jim Dower: #2 WBA Lucas Browne (24-0, 21 KOs) showed tremendous heart and excellent boxing skills to hang in there and score a 10th round knockout win over World Boxing Association heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev (34-3-1, 21 KOs) tonight in front of a packed audience at the Colosseum Sport Hall, in Grozny, Russia.

Browne, 36, caught a sloppy and tired Chagaev with a beautiful right hand to the head in the 10th round to put him on his back on the canvas. Chagaev took ages to get back to his feet after the knockdown. When the action resumed, Browne came forward and calmly landed four straight hands to the head that connected cleanly.

Browne then started bombing Chagaev with both hands as Chagaev started to wilt and stagger. At that point, the referee Stanley Christodoulou stepped in and stopped the fight. It was a good thing the fight was stopped because there was no way that Chagaev was going to be able to make it out of the round. There was too much time and Browne was hitting him with way too much power. Browne wasn’t tired, and he could have hammered Chagaev at will until he dropped if the referee hadn’t halted it.

It was a close fight going into the 6th round. Chagaev caught Browne with a long left hand to the head that upended the Australian heavyweight. Browne looked hurt after getting back up to his feet. Chagaev unloaded with everything that he had to try and get Browne out of there, but he did a good job of covering up and blocking Chagaev’s best shots.

Chagaev got the better of Browne in rounds 7 and 9. Browne wasn’t sitting down on his shots the way he needed to in those rounds.

In the 10th, Chagaev was putting a lot of pressure on Browne and had him backed to the corner. At that point, Chagaev attempted to hit with a left hand. Browne threw a right hand at the exact same time and his shot connected perfectly to head of Chagaev, and it sent him down hard on the canvas. Browne got everything he had in that punch, and it’s not surprising that Chagaev was dropped. It’s a credit to Chagaev that he was able to get back up to his feet after such a knockdown, because a lot of fighters wouldn’t have been able to. Browne had Chagaev at his mercy after the fight was resumed. Chagaev tried to throw a couple of half-hearted shots in between Browne’s bombardment, but there was not stopping the Australian. He was like a shark that smelled blood in the water. He wasn’t going to be stopped, and the only way that Chagaev was going to make out of that round was by taking every big power shot that Browne threw. The referee didn’t give Chagaev a chance to take all those unanswered shots, as he moved in quickly and stopped the contest once he realized how defenseless Chagaev was.

Heavyweight Edmund Gerber (26-2, 17 KOs) made easy work of journeyman Brian Minto (41-22, 26 KOs) in stopping him in the 2nd round.

Sporting a 38lb weight advantage, the 6’3″ Gerber dropped the much shorter and lighter 5’11” Minto twice in the 2nd round with hard right hands to the head. The fight was then halted after the second knockdown. The official time of the stoppage was at 2:40 of the round. Minto made Gerber look like a high quality heavyweight in this fight.

In other action on the card, welterweight Ali Funeka (38-5-3, 30 KOs) pulled off an upset in defeating the previously undefeated Vishkahn Murzabekov (12-1, 6 KOs) by a 12 round split decision. The final judges’ scores were 115-112 and 114-113 for Funeka and 117-111 for Murzabekov. The crowd was completely silent after the judges’ scores were announced, as it looks like they weren’t expecting the 37-year-old Funeka to win the contest.

Murzabekov knocked Funeka down in the 2nd round. However, Funeka came on strong in the second half of the fight to dominate the action and outwork Murzabekov

Undefeated cruiserweight Tyrone Spong (3-0, 3 KOs) stayed unbeaten with a 2nd round knockout win over David Gogishvilli (12-1, 8 KOs)
