Rigondeaux: Frampton and Quigg are cowards!

Image: Rigondeaux: Frampton and Quigg are cowards!By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBA/WBO super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (16-0, 10 KOs) has a nice little mismatch scheduled next month on March 12 against British fighter Jazza Dickens (21-1, 6 KOs) in a 10 round but on the undercard of the lightweight contest between WBO champion Terry Flanagan and Derry Mathews at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK.

Rigondeaux is hoping to get the winner of the February 27 fight between IBF 122lb champion Carl Frampton and WBA “regular” super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg. Rigondeux sees both of them as cowards for choosing not to fight him all this time, and he’s hoping that he’ll finally get a chance to fight the winner of that fight.

The World Boxing Association has said that the winner of the Frampton-Quigg fight must face Rigondeaux next. However, there’s also a chance that the winner of the Frampton vs. Quigg fight will elect to vacate the WBA title and hold onto the IBF strap in order to avoid taking the Rigondeaux fight. The WBA won’t be able to do anything if the winner of the Frampton-Quigg fight elects to vacate.

They’ll have the perfect excuse for not facing Rigondeaux by saying there’s no money in that fight. Obviously, the British boxing public would be very, very interested in seeing Frampton or Quigg fight Rigondeaux, but nonetheless, it’s quite likely that the winner will vacate rather than risk their hide and their titles against Rigondeaux.

Frampton and Quigg are both cowards for finding ways to avoid the best in their division,” Rigondeaux said. “We wait in anticipation to see if the winner of a great fight between them would step up and step in the ring with me, so the whole world can see who the best 122-pound fighter is. Fans should come see the real super world champion in Liverpool, as I¹ll be ready to put on a show and be in a position to happily knock out the winner, if either would even fathom the idea of stepping in the same ring with me.”

So there it is. Rigondeaux sees Frampton and Quigg as cowards for failing to fight the best in their division. It’s interesting that Frampton and Quigg never chose to fight Rigondeaux, and also never fought Nonito Donaire and Leo Santa Cruz. I’m just saying. I don’t know how they could not fight those guys because those are logical fights that would have made them a ton of money by now. If they lost to them, then at least they’s know where they stand in terms of talent.

It’s kind of sad that we probably won’t be seeing Rigondeaux face the winner of the Frampton-Quigg fight, but that’s how it goes in boxing. The sport is a business, and fighters tend to take the fights that will further their careers. The Frampton vs. Quigg fight is taking place for a couple of reasons. One, they both can make a ton of money in the fight. Two, they both think they can win. With Rigondeaux, it’s a different story. I don’t think Frampton and Quigg honestly believe they can beat Rigondeaux. As such, I think it’s just another reason not to take the fight with him.

As for Jazza Dickens, I Don’t see him having any chance at all against Rigondeaux. This is arguably a big step down for Rigondeaux from his last opponent Drian Francisco, who Rigondeaux beat by a lopsided 10 round decision last November on the undercard of the Miguel Cotto vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fight card. I think Drian Francisco would wipe the deck with the light hitting Dickens if that fight was to get made. Francisco hits really hard, and I think Dickens would be blown out of the water by him.

I see Rigondeaux blasting Dickens out in three or four rounds. Dickens was beaten by Kid Galahad by a 10th round knockout in 2013. The thing is, Rigondeaux would likely have an easy time totally dominating the likes of Galahad in a one-sided fight. That just shows you how over-matched Dickens is against Rigondeaux. This is a fight where Rigondeaux can stay in 1st gear all night long if he wants and still wind up winning every round and having a lot of fun.
