Mayweather: Triple G would be easy work at 160

Floyd MayweatherBy Allan Fox: Floyd Mayweather Jr. says he would make easy work of IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “Triple G” Golovkin if he were to fight him at 160lbs.

When asked by fans recently if he would be willing to fight Golovkin, Mayweather said that he can barely make the welterweight limit of 147lbs, and he doesn’t see how he could make the upper middleweight limit of 160lbs for a fight against Golovkin. But in the next breath, Mayweather says that Golovkin is a basic fighter, nothing special, and an easy opponent for him at middleweight.

“I can barely make 147, so how can I fight at 160,” said Mayweather to Fighthype. “Triple G, I mean, not being disrespectful, but he’s straight up and down, no special effects. That’s easy work…with the Pacquiao fight, you know, 10 rounds to 2, that was a blowout,” said Mayweather.

I think Mayweather is afraid to fight Golovkin, I really do. If Mayweather were to come back and take that fight, he would likely be knocked out by him.

Golovkin is going to put a ton of pressure on Mayweather to come out of retirement and fight him if he defeats Saul “Canelo” Alvarez later this year. A knockout win for Golovkin over Canelo will make Mayweather look bad because he fought a boring fight to defeat Canelo in 2013. Mayweather did little more than jab and run all night long to get the victory. If Golovkin takes on Canelo and stops him, it’s going to show the boxing world the difference between him and Mayweather. Even if Canelo doesn’t take the fight with Golovkin, it’s still going to put pressure on Mayweather to come out of retirement to fight Golovkin.

Golovkin says he would be willing to come down to 154 to fight Mayweather, so it wouldn’t even be necessary for him to fight at 160. Mayweather seems to be a step behind the news from what Golovkin is saying about him, because he’s willing to fight Mayweather at 154. Golovkin weights less than Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, a fighter that Mayweather beat three years ago in 2013.

If Mayweather was willing to fight Canelo at junior middleweight, then he should be willing to fight Golovkin too in that weight class. I think a lot of boxing fans have a pretty good idea why Mayweather might not want to fight Golovkin, because he punches harder than Canelo and has one punch power. Mayweather would have to completely shut Golovkin would by not letting him land one punch in the entire fight for him to guarantee that he wins. If Golovkin lands anything at all, he would have a good chance of knocking Mayweather clean out.

Mayweather does a lot of talking about Golovkin, and you have to wonder why. Ever since Mayweather retired after beating a soft opponent in Andre Berto last September, he’s spent a lot of time talking about Golovkin. Is it jealousy on Mayweather’s part?

The thing is Mayweather isn’t going to decrease the amount of fans that Golovkin has by talking about him, and downgrading his skills. That kind of stuff is going to go in one ear of the fans and out the other. The fans aren’t going to pay attention to Mayweather saying that Golovkin is straight up and down and nothing special. Unless Mayweather is willing to get inside the ring to fight him and test his skills, he’s not going to make fans think any less of the Kazakhstan fighter.

The only way that Mayweather can knock the Golovkin hype train off the tracks is to come out of retirement and beat him in a fight. If Mayweather isn’t willing to try and do that, then he’s wasting his time byt talking down about him. Fans aren’t going to listen to that kind of stuff because Golovkin is fighting and knocking everybody out. For his part, all Mayweather is doing is living his life outside the ring as a fan.

The fans saw how dull Mayweather’s last fights where, and they were nothing like Golovkin’s. The last time Mayweather scored a knockout was his cheap shot KO of Victor Ortiz in 2011, and that shouldn’t have been a knockout in my view. Before that, the last time that Mayweather scored a legitmiate KO was his stoppage win over light welterweight Ricky Hatton in 2007.
