Image: Mayweather: I scored Garcia-Guerrero a drawBy Dan Ambrose: The judges had Danny Garcia (32-0, 18 KOs) beating Robert Guerrero (33-4-1, 18 KOs) last night by an 8 rounds to 4 score in their fight for the vacant WBC 147lb title, but Floyd Mayweather Jr. didn’t agree at all with the scoring for the fight.

Mayweather had the fight scored a 12 round draw. The judges scored it 116-112, 116-112 and 116-112. I thought the scoring was too wide in favor of Garcia.

There’s no way that he won eight rounds to four, but Garcia has had the judges on his side in many of the fights he’s been involved with from his first fight with Erik Morales to his fights against Mauricio Herrera and Lamont Peterson. Garcia won all those fights. I had him losing all of them. I initially thought Garcia won 7 rounds to 5, but after going through my round by round scoring, I overlooked that Guerrero had won both the 10th and the 12th, along with 4 of the first 6 rounds. That means that Guerrero should have been given a draw for the fight.

“It was cool. I had it a draw,” Mayweather said to Fighthype about the Garcia vs. Guerrero fight. “It was a little closer [than the judges scored it]. You still got to realize that Danny, for a fighter that’s undefeated, he’s young. From what I saw, Robert won the early rounds. Danny Garcia won the middle rounds. Robert kind of came on in the last two rounds. It was kind of close, but it’s boxing. I think Danny needs to work on more boxing, not just depending on power shots. He’s the new WBC world welterweight champion. He’s a world champion now and I’m proud of him,” Mayweather said.

Guerrero fought well at times and I had him winning 4 of the first 6 six rounds. I thought Guerrero won the 10th and possibly the 12th. He fought well enough to deserve two of the final six rounds of the fight. If you gave Guerrero four of the first six rounds like I did, then that comes out to a draw. I couldn’t give Garcia the 12th round, because Guerrero got the better of him when the two fighters were going toe-to-toe in the final 30 seconds of the round. I can agree with Mayweather that the fight should have been scored a draw.

I had Guerrero winning rounds 1, 3, 4, 5, 10 and 12. That comes out to be a draw. The rounds that Garcia won, he looked very good in, but still the fight is scored round by round. Garcia wasn’t knocking Guerrero down and getting any 10-8 rounds. For that reason, the fight deserved to be a draw.

“They only gave Guerrero four rounds? I had it a lot closer, 7-5, 6-6,” Mayweather said. “I understand we need to have a lot more judges that aren’t biased, but Danny went out there and did what he had to do. I’m not taking anything away from him like I have anything negative to say about Danny Garcia, but I thought the fight was a lot closer. I’m not the judge and it’s not in my hands. I’m proud of whoever won, and Danny Garcia is a very exciting fighter, and a very hungry fighter, and he went out there and did what he had to do,” Mayweather said.
