Mayweather would give Golovkin problems, says Robert G

Floyd Mayweather WinsBy Dan Ambrose: If Floyd Mayweather Jr. makes a comeback at some point in the future one of the best possible fights for him would be against IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin. Mayweather has exhausted his other potential big money fights by beating Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

Fighting rematches against them would be pointless and a total waste of time, because it wouldn’t be breaking new ground and boxing fans would see it as a money grab for Mayweather and save their money by not buying it. A fight against Golovkin though would be a match that fans would pay to see because there would be a very real chance that Mayweather would lose the fight and lose by a knockout.

Trainer Robert Garcia says he thinks Mayweather would give Golovkin by problems with his jab and right hand. He believes that Golovkin would have a potentially difficult time trying to land his big power shots against him if the fight did happen. The question is would the fight happen? Mayweather has been very calculated in picking out guys that he knew he could beat in the past like the slow-footed Canelo Alvarez, and a past his best Pacquiao. Golovkin might be someone that Mayweather would be unwilling to fight because his punching power would more than make up for his slow hand speed.

“He’ be a very difficult fight for Floyd, because Triple G is very strong,” Robert said to Fighhype. “He’s got tremendous power, but Floyd is very smart. He hardly gets hit, and Triple G gets hit. Mayweather’s jab and straight right would probably be a big key to a win, but it wouldn’t be easy. If Triple G lands those punches, but can he land them? Will he land them? That’s why I’d like to see it. Mayweather doesn’t have to take it, but that would be the fight. If Mayweather comes back, that’s the only fight that makes sense. Mayweather still fights like a young fighter. He could fight for another two to three years if he wants, but he doesn’t have to but he can if he wants,” Garcia said.

If a Mayweather-Golovkin fight did take place, it’s likely that Mayweather choose to fight Golovkin just like he did Marcos Maidana in their second fight by using a lot of movement. Maidana had problems catching up to Mayweather to land anything substantial, and the fight was very boring to watch because of the movement from Mayweather. However, Golovkin punches harder than Maidana, cuts off the ring better, and is going to focus on landing body shots. We saw how Golovkin was able to knock Martin Murray down with a body shot in their fight, and Murray was moving frequently to keep from getting hit. Golovkin would definitely land his power shots against Mayweather no matter much running he did. As far as Mayweather holding Golovkin back with a jab and straight right hand, I don’t think that would stop him for an instant. Mayweather doesn’t have the power to keep Golovkin off of him, and he would be little more than a lighter, weaker version of Willie Monroe Jr.
