Should Kell Brook forget about Amir Khan?

brook67By Robbie Bannatyne: Matchroom Promotions supremo, Eddie Hearn, recently used an analogy which described his top fighters, who haven’t quite transcended to P-P-V superstars yet, as jumbo jets hovering in the skies looking for the right place and time to land.

Hearn’s jumbo jet analogy applies perfectly to Kell Brook, one of Matchroom Promotion’s premier fighters. Despite being the IBF world champion for nearly two years, Brook is still frustratingly circling the clouds waiting for that big fight to land on so that he can plant his flag firmly on the boxing world.

As far as Kell Brook is concerned, his route to riches and recognition as one of boxing’s elite names is a summer showdown with bitter British rival Amir Khan. However, the negotiations have suffered major turbulence and often oscillate from triumph to tragedy with each passing day. One thing’s for sure, Amir Khan is proving to be a difficult destination to land a jumbo jet on. Of course their can be no progress without struggle. Achieving anything worthwhile requires an abundance of hard work, effort and determination.

But surely their must come a time when Kell Brook will say enough is enough and begin the search for a new dancing partner. One that will give him the financial security and sporting challenge he so obviously craves. In an era of boxing where the best seldom ever fight best, it is refreshing to see just how eager Kell Brook is to lock horns with all the other elite world champions in the red hot welterweight division. Many boxers say they mean business, but with Brook you know he means it.

He recognizes that he hasn’t fought the caliber of opponents a fighter of his class really should have faced by this point of his career. Now a legitimate world champion, after an oft times agonizing journey, Brook is keen to make up for lost time and build a legacy befitting of his talent and boxing ability. The Sheffield man has his heart set on a big summer showdown with Amir Khan, however he is willing to explore other avenues to stardom. With Eddie Hearn’s ability to maneuver his way around the quagmire of promotional and network television politics in American boxing, Brook is in a position where he could feasibly target mega bouts with any of the other belt holders in the 147lb weight class.

If Khan doesn’t want to drink from the well, then Kell Brook shouldn’t wait around any longer in the hope that the water hits Khan’s lips. Instead he should position his jumbo jet to land on Danny Garcia (WBC), the winner of Tim Bradley vs Manny Pacquiao (WBO) or the winner of Keith Thurman vs Shawn Porter (WBA). All aforementioned names, barring the exception of Manny Pacquiao who may retire, will be ready for a money spinning unification fight in the summer months. So will Kell Brook, providing he gets past his IBF mandatory challenger Kevin Bizier in March.

One suspects all of those warhorses would be more willing to go the well with Kell Brook than Amir Khan seems to be. Sure he may have to travel to America once more to make his dreams a reality, but that shouldn’t be much of a drain for a jumbo jet.
