Abraham: Wladimir beats Fury in rematch

wladimir44By Scott Gilfoid: WBO super middleweight champion Arthur Abraham is saying that he believes 39-year-old Wladimir Klitschko (64-4, 53 KOs) will come out victorious in his recent with Britain’s Tyson Fury (25-0, 18 KOs) in 2016 to avenge his loss from last November and recapture some of his lost world titles in the process.

Abraham thinks that Wladimir just had a bad day when he fought Fury last year, but this time he’s going to be better prepared for the things that Fury does in the ring so that he can win back his IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight titles.

If Wladimir wants to win back his IBF title, he’ll need to fight the winner of this Saturday’s fight between Charles Martin and Vyacheslav Glazkov, because they’ll be fighting for the vacant IBF title on the undercard of the Deontay Wilder vs. Artur Szpilka fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

“Klitschko – this is a different calibre of fighter. But apparently that day was bad for him, and he couldn’t get it together, so Wladimir lost,” Abraham said to skysports.com. “I think Klitschko will win the rematch. Wladimir will examine the mistakes that he made and take them into account.”

Wladimir barely lost the fight by the scores of 115-112, 116-111 and 115-112. If he had thrown a few more right hands in each round, he would have won. This was against Fury who was fighting at the best he could. Fury cannot improve over what he was last time out. The only fighter of the two capable of improving the second time around is Wladimir.

I believe Wladimir is over the hill at this point, and I think it’s beyond a training issue for him. However, I do believe he can do better in the rematch if he simply throws more punches, and I expect that to happen. Wladimir will almost surely be looking to throw an additional 20 to 30 power punches each round.

Those are things that Wladimir can easily focus on in training camp. If Wladimir throws more right hands in the rematch, then there won’t be anything Fury can do. He can’t stop Wladimir’s right hands.

Wladimir shouldn’t waste his time throwing jabs and left hooks, because it was clear that he can’t land those type of punches against Fury because he’s leaning back too much and moving. What Wladimir needs to do is fight like Deontay Wilder. I mean, Wladimir should focus on throwing his right hand bombs with major speed and power instead of throwing them tentatively the way he always does.

Further, Wladimir should be ready to immediately throw another right hand if/when he misses his right hands. If Wladimir is in close after missing with a right hand from the outside, then he need to throw a short right immediately. When throws right hands, he falls forward into Fury. Instead of reloading and firing a right hand in close, Wladimir timidly clinches and waits for the referee to separate him from Fury. If Wladimir resists the urge to hold and instead throws a short right hand, he’ll nail Fury every time.

If you look at Wladimir’s loss to Corrie Sanders from 13 years ago in 2003, Sanders focused on throwing shorter punches in that fight to get the better of Wladimir. This was the perfect style to fight. Wladimir should use the strategy that Sanders was using to avenge his loss to Fury.
