Mayweather: If Canelo gets out of line, I’ll beat him again

canelo7657(Canelo Alvarez seen here at the post-fight press conference after being beaten by Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013. Canelo doesn’t look like a happy camper, does he?) By Dan Ambrose: Floyd Mayweather Jr. took some big shots at Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya and his flagship fighter WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez last Saturday night.

Mayweather says that De La Hoya is counting on Canelo on being his money fighter. However, if he gets too uppity, he’ll come back and beat him again like he did in their one-sided fight in 2013. Mayweather won that fight by an easy 12 round majority decision in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mayweather says he prefers to work with guys that are drug free like Richard Schaefer and Al Haymon. He likes them because they dress like men. Mayweather is obviously taking a shot at De La Hoya over the photos that leaked out years ago showing him wearing fishnet pantyhose.

“Like I said before, all [De la Hoya is] banking on now is Canelo,” Mayweather said to Fighthpe. “And s–t, if I come back in the game—Canelo, you already know what I did to you, and I could do it again…if you get out of line. Because you already know what I say: You violate, and I’ll demonstrate, and that’s for all 49.”

Mayweather might need to come back soon to put Canelo in his place, because the 25-year-old Mexican star is getting pretty confident with the wins he’s been racking up over the competition that De La Hoya has been putting in front of him.

Canelo has been getting the benefit of the doubt in the scoring of some of his recent fights, as he appeared to lose his fight against Erislandy Lara and was given a wide decision over Miguel Cotto last November in a fight that was closer than the judges scored it.

There was also Canelo’s fight against Austin Trout that was a lot closer than the judges scored it. If Canelo ducks the fight against his #1 WBC mandatory challenger Gennady Golovkin later this year, then I don’t see anyone beating Canelo for many years unless it’s by accident with Golden Boy slipping up and matching him against someone a little too good.

I don’t see that happening though. No way do I see Golden Boy putting Canelo in with someone that could potentially beat him like Demetrius Andrade or Jermall Charlo. Those guys are just too good for Canelo in my view. The same with Golovkin. Those fighters are like the third rail, and I can’t see Golden Boy and De La Hoya letting Canelo get in contact with any of them in the ring.

“It’s good to work with guys like Richard Schaefer and Al Haymon, guys that [are] drug free, guys that wear suits, guys that dress like men,” Mayweather said. ”And of course, you know I’m sending shots at Oscar De La Hoya. I’m always sending shots at him because I don’t respect a man that dress[es] in drag.”

It would be nice to see Mayweather come back to fight Canelo a second time, because it would be a huge fight. However, if Canelo fights Golovkin later this year, which I really doubt, then I don’t see Mayweather ever fighting Canelo again because Golovkin will likely make easy work of Canelo. I don’t think De La Hoya is going to let Golovkin get that fight unless he agrees to a 155lb catch-weight handicap and a 90-10 split of the revenue. De La Hoya said recently that if he gets it his way, Golovkin will be getting the short money on a 90-10 split.

By De La Hoya saying that, it’s like he’s pretty much coming right out and saying he doesn’t want the Canelo-Golovkin fight to take place. There’s no way that Golovkin and his management will agree to a 90-10 split of the money, especially given that the fight could do better than the 2.2 million PPV buys that the Mayweather-Canelo fight did in 2013. If Canelo gets a 90-10 split of the money for a Canelo-Golovkin fight, he would make HUGE money for that fight. Golovkin would obviously still get a career high payday, but he wouldn’t be able to share in what he brought to the table in terms of being a very big B-side name.

I think Canelo would love to fight Mayweather a second time, because he probably believes that he’s improved enough to defeat the 38-year-old fighter. I doubt that Canelo would do any better than he did the first time, but the money would be well worth it for him.
